Breaion Shanique King will participate in a panel discussion to address “Traffic Stop,” the HBO documentary about her violent arrest, at 7 p.m. on Tuesday, March 26 in the McIntosh Center activities room at Ohio Northern University. The event is free and open to the public.

King was slammed to the ground by the arresting officer when she was stopped for speeding in Austin, Texas, in June 2016. Austin police Chief Art Acevedo later apologied to King for the incident and pledged to initiate a series of administrative investigations and increased training.

Besides King, other panelists include Joseph DeLeeuw, ONU assistant professor of criminal justice; Greg Horne, ONU chief of police; and ONU students Brenden Hadley, Dominique Redmond and Bonita Nkemeh.

“The purpose of the event is to highlight Breaion King’s story and to discuss how we can work collaboratively to restore and maintain a great relationship between students and law enforcement,” said LaShonda Gurley, ONU director of multicultural development. “Key points that will be emphasized include Ms. King’s story and how this impacted her; the perceptions that exist between students, the community and law enforcement; and ideas on how to change perceptions and strengthen relationships between students, residents and law enforcement officers.”

The panel discussion is led by the ONU MLK Committee, ONU Brother 2 Brother, ONU Sister 2 Sister and the Black Student Union.
