Eight seniors-to be from Ada, Upper Scioto Valley, and Hardin Northern High Schools have been named to this year’s Buckeye Boys State and Buckeye Girls State. 

Local delegates for Buckeye Girls State are:
• Megan Miller, Hardin Northern HS,
• Liberty Lawrence, Upper Scioto Valley HS,
• Katie Butterfield and Kaylee Huffer, both from Ada High School.

Local delegates for Buckeye Boys State are:
Logan Conrad, Hunter Wells, Alex Morgan and Nathan Hurtig all from Ada High School.       

Buckeye Boys State is sponsored statewide by the American Legion and Buckeye Girls State is sponsored statewide by the American Legion Auxiliary. 

Locally both events are sponsored by the Foss-Agin-Meyer Post 185 of the American Legion.  

When the delegates arrive they will be assigned a political party. The resident halls in which they live during the program will be designated counties and the floors will be designated cities. The students will file petitions for a variety of offices from governor to city council and participate in the election process.  After elections and inaugurations, they put the government into action.

Delegates are selected from candidates either chosen by their schools or those who show a special interest in the political process.  After each candidate is interviewed by the selection panel, then the panel decides which candidates to select as delegates.         

Over 1,200 young men attend Buckeye Boys State, which is held  June 9-16 at Miami University in Oxford, and 900 young ladies attend Buckeye Girls State, which is held June 16-22 at the University of Mount Union in Alliance.

It is a fast paced program of mock government at the state, county, and local levels.  The main objective of the programs is to train young men and women, who have completed their junior year, in the duties, rights, privileges of citizenship by providing the attendees the opportunity to actively participate in a democratic form of government.
