Centenarian Mildred Moore grew up in Ada
Funeral services for Mildred L. James Moore, 99, Lawrence, will be held at noon, Friday Sept. 27, at the First United Methodist Church in Lawrence, Kansas.
Graveside service will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 5, at the Woodlawn Cemetery in Ada. Mildred died Wednesday, Sept. 4, 2019, at her home.
She was born Feb. 3, 1920 in Ada, the daughter of Clyde and Nellie (Garwood) James.
Mildred, who was called Sally by close family and friends, was a homemaker known for her gracious hosting of guests and large family gatherings. Family particularly appreciated her talent for pie-baking. She was a talented seamstress who sewed her own square dance dresses and passed her sewing knowledge and skills to her daughters, granddaughter and great-granddaughters. Sally played bridge regularly in a continuing bridge group for over 40 years.
She was an active member of the First United Methodist Church in Lawrence, where she attended services and Sunday school, and volunteered in the church office.
She married Roy Willis Moore on March 17, 1939, in Ada. He preceded her in death on Feb. 20, 2004. Mildred was preceded in death also by her brothers, William (Julie) James and Lester (Elizabeth) James, and her sister, Violet James Bond.
Roy and Sally enjoyed a long, loving life together. They moved with their family six times in support of Roy’s career. In retirement, they traveled extensively to Europe, the Middle East, Hawaii, and all around the lower 48 on long road trips to visit family and for square dance events with friends.
Survivors include his two daughters, Sharon L. (William) Nichols, Rochester, Minn., Ann J. (Tilden) Lerner, Corrales, New Mexicon; son, James A. Moore, Lawrence; and four grandchildren; Susan (Joseph) Phillips, Douglas (Patti) Nichols, Nicholas (Jessica) Lerner, Zachary (Stefanie) Lerner and eight great grandchildren.
