Area teachers will learn how to best integrate engineering design activities in their classrooms during a workshop on Thursday, Oct. 10, in the James Lehr Kennedy Engineering Building (room 203) at Ohio Northern University.

The workshop will include teachers from Hardin Northern, Perrysburg, Bath, Donnell, Ottawa-Glandorf and Leipsic school districts. The teachers instruct students in grades 5 through 12.

Participants will learn three hands-on projects they can then use to engage with students and will discuss topics such as engineering and math connections, managing active classrooms, contextualizing hands-on work and modifying activities to meet their students’ abilities.

The workshop will be led by ONU faculty members Todd France, engineering education; Tena Roepke, mathematics; and Thomas Zechman, civil engineering. ONU students who have received Noyce Foundation scholarships will also be involved.

The workshop is part of a project that is funded by a grant ONU received in 2018 from the National Science Foundation.

The five-year grant will total approximately $1.2 million, including scholarships. The funding source is the Robert Noyce Teacher Scholarship Program.
