Dr. Albert Tewfik Awad was retired professor emeritus of pharmacognosy
Dr. Albert Tewfik Awad, 83, died at 2:52 p.m. May 3, 2012, at St. Rita's Medical Center.
He was born Nov. 25, 1928, in Cairo, Egypt. In 1958, he married Elvira Nashid Sawiris, who survives in Ada.
Dr. Awad received a bachelor's degree in 1952 in pharmacy and a master's degree in 1960 in pharmacognosy from Cairo University. In 1961, he emigrated to the United States with his family. He received his doctorate in pharmacognosy in 1966 from The Ohio State University. That year, he joined the faculty at Ohio Northern University College of Pharmacy, where he rose to the rank of professor in 1971. He taught passionately until 1996, when he retired as professor emeritus of pharmacognosy from the Department of Pharmacology and Biomedical Sciences.
The Albert T. Awad Award in Immunology is presented annually to an outstanding student. He and his family became naturalized U.S. citizens in 1972. He was a registered pharmacist in the state of Ohio. He was an active member of the Ada and ONU community, including involvement in the Kiwanis Club, United Presbyterian Church and as a faculty adviser for Kappa Psi pharmacy fraternity. He was also an adviser to the ONU Pharmacy Student Christian Society and was active in ONU's student international organization.
Survivors also include two sons, Dr. Joseph (Jane Gilliam) Awad, of Brentwood, Tenn., and Samuel (Kathleen) Awad, of Hinsdale, Ill; a daughter, Mimi Awad, of Oak Park, Ill.; and five grandchildren, Peter, Sarah, Thomas, Joseph Anthony and Anna Marie Awad.
He was preceded in death by four brothers and two sisters.
Private memorial services will be held at a later date. Per his wishes, his body has been donated to OSU for research and teaching.
