Chase Sumner advances to NCAA national wrestling championships
Ada HS grad and ONU freshman Chase Sumner was a late addition to the 180-man field for the 2020 NCAA Division III Wrestling Championships March 13-14 at Cedar Rapids, Iowa.
Sumner received a bid on Monday after a Central Regional qualifier from his 149-pound weight class became injured and could not compete.
Per NCAA rules, the fourth place finisher from the same region as the injured wrestler assumes that spot in the tournament.
Sumner joins ONU senior Seth Transue (Plain City/Jerome) and junior Cash Thompson (Lake Odessa, Mich./Lakewood) as Polar Bears at the Championships.
Transue won the 133-pound weight class and was named the tournament's Most Outstanding Wrestler to lead Ohio Northern Central Region Championships Feb. 28-29 in Adrian, Mich.
Thompson qualified by finishing second at 197 pounds at the Central Regionals.
Sumner finished fourth at the Central Region tournament.
The top three placers in each of the 10 weight classes qualified for the NCAA III Championships.
Wrestled as a Bulldog
Sumner was voted the Northwest Conference Most Valuable Wrestler twice by the NWC coaches while a student at Ada HS.
Sumner won the NWC crown at four different weight classes from 2015-18: he won at 120 lbs. as a freshman, at 132 as a sophomore, at 138 as a junior and at 145 as a senior.
