Ada Kiwanis members hear about Ada Icon
President Myrna McCurdy called the weekly meeting of the Ada Kiwanis Club on order at noon on Tuesday April 30 at McIntosh Center, ONU.
The invocation was offered by Jon Umphress.
Elizabeth McKinney, Circle K, was welcomed as a guest.
The birthday of member Al Baillis (May 11) was noted.
The membership anniversary of Jon Umphress (May 6, 1997) was also noted.
The wedding 36th anniversary of Jeff and Schulman on May 7 was noted.
It was reported that member Charles Van Dyne has been named the Ohio Elk’s Man of the Year.
In business:
- The membership heard the weekly financial report from Treasurer Bryan Marshall.
- The next meeting of the Ada Kiwanis Satellite Club is set for Wednesday May 1st, 6:00 p.m., at the Community Health Professional’s building.
- Joe Ferguson reported that Ada Village entrance signs are close to reality. The south sign will be at the Community Health Professionals building near Ohio 235. The north sign will be on the corner of a farm just one mile north of Ada.
- Ferguson also reported on the two students (Shelby Hazelton and Mackenzie Wills) attended the Ohio Kiwanis Key Leader program over the weekend. The event was held at Recreations Unlimited in Ashley, Ohio. They were sponsored by the club.
- President Myrna gave a quick report on the Ada Arbor Day event. Each the student was given a small pine tree sapling (4-5 feet tall). The club also made it annual donation to the Village of Ada for the planting of trees.
- Heather Cox spoke about the Buy Ada First events that are planned for June 14th, and July 12th.
- ONU Circle K advisor Bill Fuller reported that the club held their final with meeting last week with a cookout at ONU. The food was good. Gifts and certificates were exchanged. A thank you note has been extended to the club. Officers are making exam gifts. President McCurdy noted that the club’s Face book page was very nice.
Kiwanis Education Minute:
The number of Service Leadership clubs reached 8,838 in 2011-2012. They are as follows: Key Clubs 5,105; Circle K 497; Builders Clubs 1,544; K-Kids 1,222 and Aktion Clubs 470.

Peter Previte introduced Fred Steiner the owner of the Adaicon.com (launched in March 2012) and Blufftonicon.com that started September 2009). The Ada Icon now has about 2,000 hits in a 30-day period.
In addition to Fred’s work on the Icons he also is the Chair of Bluffton Area Chamber of Commerce.
The adaicon.com is a free “newspaper” that is online where revenue is generated from online advertised.
He discussed a variety of the data that on the use of the site including the fact that the average person who visits the site spends about 2 minutes on the site per visit. At present, there are 34 advertisers that support the site.
He noted that he is a supporter of the small businesses and would like to interact with anyone who has content or ideas for his site.
