Ada freshman is state-wide library contest winner
Is Ada High School freshman Thalia Detty the model for the book cover “Viola in Reel Life”?
The photo with this story certainly suggests it. However, the answer is, “maybe.”
Thalia submitted her photo entry for the state-wide Ohio Educational Library Media Association (OELMA) and was selected statewide winner of the solo category. It was one of three contest categories.
The contest was part of the OELMA’s celebration of National School Library Month in April.
"The challenge was to include people somehow in with a book cover," said Chanda Smith, Ada school media center director.
"I went through our collection and picked quite a few that could have been used, and she chose this one."
OELMA's theme this year is School Libraries: Facing Forward. In keeping with the theme, its communications strategic committee created the book face contest.
Thalia took the photo as a supplemental project for Mr. Klingler's Digital Graphics class. She won a $25 Barnes and Noble gift card.
Thalia’s entry used the book cover of Adriana Trigiani’s “Viola in Reel Life.”
Here's a synopsis of the book:
The story is about a girl who somehow ends up at an all-girls school in South Bend, Indiana, far away from her home in Brooklyn, New York.
She resorts to viewing the world (and hiding) behind the lens of her video camera.
Boarding school, though, and her roommates and the Midwest are nothing like she thought they would be, and soon Viola realizes she may be in for the most incredible year of her life.
But first she has to put the camera down and let the world in.
