Lady Bulldogs cage Tigers
The visiting Ada High School girls basketball team convincingly defeated local non-league rival Waynesfield-Goshen 48-36 Tuesday evening, February 8.
Ada led 15-12 after the first quarter as Courtney Sumner buried two triples. The Bulldog girls extended the lead to 22-16 at halftime.
Late in the third period the Bulldogs still led by six before going on a run to grab a 36-23 lead heading to the final stanza. Sumner tallied seven points in the third quarter.
Lady Bulldog junior Sumner led all players with 19 points. Sophomore playmaker Olivia Burkhart netted nine while sophomore Mariah King added eight, with six coming in the final period. Senior Selena Jordan added six markers.
The Lady Bulldogs improved to 8-13 with their third consecutive victory. The Lady Tigers dropped to 8-12 after the defeat.
"Overall it was a great team win; we had some players step up like Selena Jordan and Mariah King, which helped," said fourth-year Ada head coach Morgan Bass. "Mariah played her best game of the season.
"Courtney and Liv scored early for us, so in the second half they went triangle and two on us and our girls responded well by attacking it, kicking out and finishing," she added.
"We have nine seniors," said W-G head coach Jocelyn Hennon, who previously coached with Bass at Lima Senior. "Courtney and Olivia, their two guards, are very solid. We face-guarded them but they still found ways to score.
"The Ada guards did a great job driving and hitting pull-up shots," Hennon added.
Raegan Hutchison led W-G with 10 points, and she netted six in the first period. Taylor Miller scored seven, and Taylor Spencer added six markers.
The Lady Bulldogs canned 20 field goals, sinking 16 two-pointers and four treys. Ada connected on four of eight attempts from the charity stripe (50 percent).
The Tiger girls connected on 14 field goals, hitting 13 two-pointers with one triple. W-G converted six of its eight free throws (75 percent).
Ada finished 4-7 on the road this season.
