November 8 ballot issue for Liberty Township

At the October 17 meeting of the Ada-Liberty EMS board, the agenda included routine activities such as paying bills as well as business conducted once in every 20-some years: a replacement levy on the November 8 ballot.

The proposed levy would allow Chief Tom Miller to staff the station with two employees during the day and, later, to improve the station to allow staff to sleep overnight in beds rather than on a couch or in their cars. 

The district will ask voters to replace the current 1 mill levy with a new 2 mill levy. This would generate an estimated $213,500 per year.

The proposal asks voters to increase EMS funding at a time when other levies are coming off property tax bills. The Ada Exempted Village School District bonds for the new school and auditorium, a combined 6.4 mills and 8.83% of taxable values, will come off in 2023.

EMS REPORTS
All members of the board were present on the 17th: Sheila Coressel, Terry Kaiser and Jeffrey Acheson, as well as Chief Tom Miller and Financial Officer Nancy Kindle.

Reports included a breakdown of EMS calls in the third quarter of the year:

172 Calls total

130 Transported to a hospital

42 No transports (no revenue)

9 Mutual aid service provided to other communities

1 Mutual aid received

Mutual aid is most often required when crews are out on a call. 

As noted above, when a call does not result in transporting the individual to the hospital, it cannot be billed to insurance and the EMS expenses are not covered.

The above numbers don’t include football games. At a game this fall, crews left to answer a call and returned to assist an injured player.
