Ada baseball nipped late in Bulldog battle

ADA__The Ada High School baseball team lost a tough 5-3 decision in the final inning to visiting foe Columbus Grove on a warm Thursday evening, May 15.
Grove scored two runs in the top of the seventh to break a 3-3 tie and win.
Ada plated all three of its runs in the home third to overcome an early 2-0 deficit.
Ada fell to 5-16 with the tough defeat. Columbus Grove improved to 14-9 after the win.
“Another great effort,” said Ada head coach Toby Smith. “We played very well. We hope to continue to see our team build off of each game. It is fun to see us play the game this way.”
The purple and gold Bulldogs were out-hit 9-5 by Grove. Each team committed just one error.
Freshman right fielder Thad Smith doubled in a run and drew a walk.
Senior shortstop Levi Green singled, stole a base and scored a run.
Ada sophomore catcher Andrew Allen hit a single.
Third baseman Blake Zoladz stroked an RBI single in the three-run third frame.
Senior center fielder Kaine Fisher walked and stole a base.
Grove’s Aiden Patrick socked a solo home run. Basinger doubled, hit a single and drove in three runs. Meyer singled twice, had one RBI and scored a run. Hopkins scored two runs, singled and walked once. He also swiped four bases.
Ada’s Wes Mowery pitched three innings of five-hit baseball. He allowed two earned runs and struck out one.
Brody Rister got the loss in relief. He hurled four innings, giving up four hits and three earned runs. He whiffed one and walked one.
Meyer earned the win with three innings of hitless relief, striking out five. Hopkins got the same with a perfect seventh frame, striking out two.
The host Bulldogs left seven runners on base, while CG stranded four.
Ada visits local rival USV (7-8) in a makeup game May 20. The Rams beat Waynesfield 7-5 Thursday to improve to 6-2 in NWCC play.
The Bulldogs play in the sectionals at top seed Marion Local (12-7) Saturday, May 24.
