MEDIA RELEASE__Whether a winter storm leaves two inches or two feet of snow, the aftermath can bring challenges, especially if power outages occur. The Village of Ada encourages residents to take the following steps to safely dig out, protect property and stay warm during recovery.

Clear Snow Safely
When it is safe to do so, begin clearing snow around your home and vehicles as soon as possible. Fresh snow is lighter and easier to remove than snow that has settled and become compacted.

Inspect Your Home
Look for signs of roof damage, ceiling leaks, or frozen pipes. If you suspect frozen pipes, shut off your water supply and contact a plumber immediately.

Stay Warm Without Power
If you are without power, layer clothing, close off unused rooms, and gather in one room to conserve heat. Choose a south-facing room if possible to take advantage of sunlight. Block drafts with towels and drink warm beverages to help maintain body heat.

Check That Outside Vents Are Clear
After a winter storm, snow and ice can block exterior vents for furnaces, dryers, fireplaces, and water heaters, creating safety hazards such as carbon monoxide buildup. Check outside vents regularly and clear away snow and ice. If you cannot do so safely, contact a qualified professional.

Ensure Detectors Are Working
Make sure smoke and carbon monoxide detectors are functioning properly, especially if you are using fireplaces, space heaters, or generators due to power outages.

Check Trees for Damage

Watch for Ice Dams
Snow buildup on roofs can lead to ice dams, which prevent melting snow from draining properly and may cause water damage. Clear snow from roofs when it can be done safely, or hire a professional.

Don’t Forget Pets
Be alert for hazards such as icicles, icy surfaces, and downed power lines when taking pets outside. Clean pets’ paws after walks to prevent illness from snow-melting chemicals.

Use Caution When Driving
Avoid driving until road crews have time to clear and treat roads. If travel is necessary, use plowed routes and watch for black ice.

If You Experience Property Damage
Document any damage once it is safe to do so and contact your insurance provider as soon as possible.
