Letter: Civic engagement and advocacy
By Xander Wells
Ada Village Councilor
In my opinion, elected representatives need to reach out to community members and organizations to be effective advocates for their community.
Too often, we see our representatives wait until something is affecting them personally to have a desire to make a change. On the local level, this isn’t necessarily due to corruption or bribes, but due to personal interest coming before constituents' interest.
I often urge residents to come to council meetings to share their piece, because that seems to be where they are listened to the most. I have seen firsthand people who are in public service for their own gain, even when that gain is very little.
This letter should serve as encouragement. Reach out to your representatives at any level and tell them what would help you. It is an honor to serve and represent the people of Ada, and I am entrusting you to hold us accountable.
