Smith 10th in 1,500 meter event
CLAREMONT, Calif. — Ohio Northern senior Dan Smith finished 10th in the 1,500-meter run on the final day of the NCAA III Men's Outdoor Track & Field Championships Saturday afternoon at Burns Field on the campus of Claremont-Mudd-Scripps colleges.
Smith finished a slow race in 3:58.29, missing All-America honors by just .48 of a second.
He qualified for the finals with a 3:52.87 in the prelims on Thursday, which was the ninth-fastest prelim time.
His NCAA qualifying effort of 3:50.00 was the fifth fastest time in the nation this season.
"The race was a tactical race which did not play into our favor," ONU head coach Jason Maus said. "It was not the race we were hoping for. He did what he could and ran hard, it just didn't work out for us.
"He ended his career at the NCAA Championships, so that's something to be very proud of. He has been a big part of our program for the past four years and has accomplished a great deal. I'm very proud of what he has done."
Dan Sullivan of Wisconsin-Stevens Point won the national title in 3:55.38.
