Scott Wills introduced Kristen Timperman, a 2013 ONU graduate and current resident for ONU Health-Wise who spoke about health and wellness tips for some current trends including shingles and whopping cough:

She said the FDA recommends that individuals older than 60 should get the vaccine Zostavax. The pain associated with shingles can last for years after the outbreak. Shingles are caused by the same virus as chicken pox. The shingles blisters can infect others with chicken pox.

Whopping cough is a bacterial respiratory infection. It is on the rise because the new vaccine is not as effective as the older vaccines which had some serious side-effects).
At this point, medical professionals are looking at having booster shot vaccines. The disease has been called the 100-day cough. The disease is highly contagious and treatment is very limited and over-the-counter medications are nearly ineffective because of the severity of the disease.

Vaccines are available and highly recommended for individuals who have infants and are around young children. Also, women should get a vaccine during their third trimester every time they are pregnant.

The 50/50 Drawing was held to support the Kiwanis Eliminate Project. Bryan Marshall was the winner.

President Cox adjourned the meeting in regular form.
