Ohio Northern University’s Pettit College of Law will present the 2015 Carhart Symposium on Tuesday, Feb. 10, at 11 a.m. in the Celebrezze Large Moot Court Room.

The program will feature “Risk Taking and Governance: The Duty to the Public,” presented by Steven L. Schwarcz, Stanley A. Star professor of law and business at Duke University, and “The Dangers of Modern Banking,” presented by Eyvindur G. Gunnarson, professor and dean of law at the University of Iceland.

This event is open to the public.

Schwarcz is the Stanley A. Star professor of law and business at Duke University and founding director of Duke’s interdisciplinary Global Capital Markets Center (now renamed the Global Financial Markets Center). His areas of research and scholarship include insolvency and bankruptcy law; international finance, capital markets, and systemic risk; and commercial law.

Prior to joining the Duke faculty, he was a partner at two leading international law firms where he represented top banks and other financial institutions in structuring innovative capital market financing transactions, both domestic and international. He also helped to pioneer the field of asset securitization, and his book, “Structured Finance, A Guide to the Principles of Asset Securitization,” is one of the most widely used texts in the field.

Gunnarson, who has been dean of faculty of law at the University of Iceland since July 2013, has been a professor at the University since 2006. Prior to this, he served as a lawyer at the Ministries of Industry and Commerce from 2000-06.

He was a law clerk at the District Court in Reykjavik from 1998-2000, and was head of the Division of Legal Affairs, Ministry for the Environment from 1996-97. He has authored several books, and his areas of research focus on contracts, laws of obligation, private international law, property law and financial markets.

The Fred L. Carhart Memorial Program in Legal Ethics was established at ONU’s College of Law in 2007 through an endowment from the estate of alumnus Dwight L. Carhart in memory of his father, Fred L. Carhart, a lifelong attorney in Marion, Ohio, until his death in 1948.

The program brings eminent scholars, jurists and lawyers to Ohio Northern to actively engage in lectures, seminars and panel discussions for the benefit of students, the college and University communities, the public, and the bench and bar. The Carhart Program funds lectures and symposia in alternating years.
