Katherine (Compton) Johnson taught for Head Start
Katherine Anne (Compton) Johnson, age 80, of Alger, passed away on Sunday, May 10, 2026, at her home.
She was born on August 23, 1945, in Kenton, Ohio, to the late William G. and Lula (Hurt) Compton. On January 17, 1964, Katherine married Jerry Johnson, and he preceded her in death on July 4, 2024.
Katherine is survived by her brother, Bill (Pat) Compton of St. Augustine, FL; two sisters: Vernice Greer and Jane Lawrence, both of Alger; twenty-three nieces and nephews; and many great nieces and nephews.
Also preceding her in death are two brothers: Denver Compton and James Compton; and a sister, Bernice Yoakam.
Katherine graduated from Alger High School in June of 1963. She attended both Owens Technical College in Findlay and Rhodes College in Lima, obtaining her Child Development Associate Certificate. Mrs. Johnson was employed by USV Schools as an Educational Aide for six years and taught for sixteen years for the HHWP Head Start Program, holding the position of Assistant Teacher in the Ada classroom and as Lead Teacher/Center Supervisor in Forest. She was a member of County Line Church, Harrod, where she has served as Sunday School Secretary, Children’s Director, VBS Music teacher and a member of the Deacon Board. Katherine volunteered at USV Elementary School as a reading tutor, worked with the Meals on Wheels program, was an adult reading tutor and a Sunday School teacher. She enjoyed gospel music, Bible study, crocheting, sewing, pressed flower arranging, journaling, genealogical research, creating cards and writing letters.
Funeral services will begin at 12:00 p.m. on Friday, May 15, 2026 at Hanson-Neely-Allison Funeral & Cremation Services, Alger with Pastor Bill Prater officiating. Burial will be in Preston Cemetery, Alger.
Friends may call two hours prior to the service from 10:00 a.m. -12:00 p.m. on Friday, May 15 at Hanson-Neely-Allison Funeral & Cremation Services, Alger.
Memorial contributions may be made to County Line Church Food Pantry and/or Deacon Christmas Fund.
