Morris Lawrence was involved in many Alger organizations

Morris G. Lawrence, 76, died on Friday, June 10, 2016, at 9:03 p.m. at Lima Memorial Health System, Lima, Ohio.

He was born on June 30, 1939, in Kenton, Ohio, to Francis L. and Gertrude (Cornwell) Lawrence who preceded him in death. On Sept. 26, 1959, he married H. Jane Compton and she survives in Alger.

Morris retired from the Whirlpool Corporation, Findlay, where he worked from 1984-2001. He was a life time resident of Alger where he attended Alger High School. He was an avid Alger historian.  

Morris was very active in sports in the Alger area and coached Little League Baseball. He was a volunteer fire fighter for the Alger Fire Department and served as chief. He was active in the Alger Village Council where he was president for two years.

He actively supported the installation of the Alger Water Treatment Plant. Morris wrote grants to secure playground equipment for the Alger Park.  He also delivered pizza for the Alger Freeze.

Also surviving are two sons: Mark Lawrence of Ada and Curtis Lawrence of St. Augustine, Fla., and one daughter: Kristin Darlene (Jimmie) Sexton of Ada; four grandchildren: Michelle (Kelly) Bolen of Ada, Samantha (Kyle) Helton of Lima, Courtney Lawrence of Ada and Jimmie (Shelby) Sexton of Bluffton; eight great grandchildren and a sister, Mable Selhorst, of Kenton.

He was preceded in death by infant brother and infant great granddaughter.

Funeral services will begin at 11 a.m.on Wednesday, June 15, at Quickstep Pentecostal Church of God at 2040 Township Road 120, Alger, with Pastor Robert Dye officiating.

Friends may call two hours prior to the service at the church on Wednesday, June 15, from 9 to 11 a.m.

In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made c/o Hanson-Neely Funeral Home for the benevolence of the family.
