It's a matter of balance

8-session course underway in Ada

By Monty Siekerman
The Area Agency on Aging in Lima has been teaching Ada seniors about balance to prevent falls and a few exercises are added into the mix. The two-hour “Matter of Balance” sessions will continue to meet at 10 a.m. on Tuesdays at ReStore Community Center through May.

The 8-session course has been well attend with several members of the Ada Senior Citizens and Harold Cotsamire’s exercise class at the United Methodist Church joining the group at ReStore. The course is designed for anyone over 55 years of age. Another class is planned for later in the year.

Connie Guyton, Ada, has been trained to lead the class. She is a volunteer with the Agency. This week, master instructor Dancie Mohler of Lima led the group.

Falls are the number one cause of injuries leading to ER visits, hospitalizations, and deaths of Ohioans age 65 and older.

Decrease muscle mass, vision and hearing decline, medical conditions and joint pain are some of the age-related changes that can increase fall risks.
