Polar Bears advance to OAC semifinals

Landen Long scores career-high 25 points

Sophomore Landen Long (Mason) scored a career-high 25 points to lead Ohio Northern to an 80-79 victory at John Carroll in the quarterfinals of the Ohio Athletic Conference Men's Basketball Tournament on Tuesday night at the DeCarlo Center.

The fifth-seeded Polar Bears (4-6 overall) advance to the semifinals and will host sixth-seeded Muskingum on Thursday night at the ONU Cports Center.

The fourth-seeded Blue Streaks end their season at 4-4.

Sophomore Adam Scott (Wapakoneta) added a career-high 16 points and sophomore Grant Heileman (Millersport/Sheridan) tied a career-high with 15 points for Ohio Northern.

Heileman converted a 3-point play with 3:05 left in the game to give ONU a 78-77 lead and junior Brandon Waugh (Columbus/Northland) converted a pair of free throws with 21.1 ticks left to give ONU an 80-77 advantage.

JCU scored with 7.2 seconds left to get within 80-79.

Waugh missed the front end of a one-and-one with 6.2 seconds left, but the Polar Bear defense forced JCU into a tough shot just ahead of the buzzer to hang on for the victory.

ONU made 27-of-61 field goal attempts for 44.3 percent and were 8-of-19 from 3-point range for 42.1 percent. JCU was 28-of-64 from the floor for 43.8 percent and shot 7-of-28 three-pointers for 25.0 percent.

The Blue Streaks out-rebounded the Polar Bears 39-38.
