Icon music review – Five awesome songs about work

I take solace that my daily grind now starts and stops at my door

Reviewed/Written by Craig Hoffman
My long work day got the best of me one late evening. I spent a good number of minutes griping to my lovely wife. I complained about my company, my boss, my coworkers, and even my lunch.

“What would you like me to do about all that?”
“I don't know. Sympathize? Empathize?”
“What difference would that make?”

“Heigh-Ho”- The Seven Dwarfs, Disney (1937)

Workers around the world can relate to this classic tune. The daily slog can get the best of even the most dedicated of employees.

Home Is Not The Office

What I’ve learned this year

As a high school columnist on the Icon

By Amelia Alexander
I have learned so much from writing here in the Icon, so I wanted to reflect on this school year and everything that I have learned from this experience so far.

1-  Giving myself grace and pushing through my own short-comings
I’ve had to learn how to produce two articles a month on top of school and sports. If I really needed to, I could take a break from this column, but I really want to stick with it, so I haven’t.

Icon music review: Five hot songs about coffee

I’d cut down on drinking caffeine, but these songs make me thirsty for more coffee

Reviewed/written by Craig Hoffman
If my heart stopped at this second, the police would find some change, a health insurance card, and a coupon for a free cup of coffee on my person. My potential demise aside, here are some great songs about my favorite morning beverage. Do you agree? Let the Icon know in the comments!

“The Coffee Song”- Frank Sinatra (1946)

A great tune to get your day started. It is a bit dated, but the warbles of Ol’ Blue Eyes are timeless. The song has been covered by several other artists as well as featured on The Muppet Show.

Empowering women to fight overpopulation

Make yourself aware of these issues, especially when the effects of the problem are more severe in other countries, especially as we are disproportionately responsible for the problem

By Amelia Alexander
Recently, a lovely person who reads my work on the Icon sent me a thoughtful article. While the article was written over a decade ago, it is still relevant. It tackles open discourse about overpopulation.

I decided to relay my main takeaways and add some of my own thoughts and some other resources. I made sure to find more current statistics than those used in the article. The article is long and covers many more points than I will right now, so it may be worthwhile to check it out. Click here to read it.

COVID-19: Safety in numbers

As vaccination rates are increasing, the number of cases in Ohio is decreasing for a second straight week

By Karen Kier,
Pharmacist on behalf of the ONU HealthWise team

As vaccination rates are increasing, the number of cases in Ohio is decreasing for a second straight week.

Ohio reports that 32.8% of the population is vaccinated, which is slightly higher than the overall country at 31.5%. These numbers are far below the estimated herd immunity requirement to successfully reduce COVID-19 infections and exposures.

Some experts believe that a 60-70% rate would be sufficient but Dr. Fauci and other infectious disease specialists estimate a 90% vaccination rate is necessary to reduce the number of cases and deaths.

Icon music review: Five songs sort of about desserts

Do you have a favorite song featuring sweets? Let the Icon know in the comments!

Reviewed/written by Craig Hoffman
I am not a big dessert guy. My wife makes super dinners. She does usually put some fruit into a little bowl for our after-dinner treat. It’s the opposite of eating chocolate cheesecake in America. And it does keep me passing health checks, so there is that.

Here are some fun songs about dessert (and other things)! Do you have a favorite song featuring sweets? Let the Icon know in the comments!

Song Recommendation: “Birthday Cake”- Rihanna (2011)
It’s not the most catchy of songs. The lyrics repeat a ton. But, hey, birthday cake is always awesome! Right?
