ONU African Student Association gala April 13

The Ohio Northern University African Student Association will hold its first-ever African Gala, from 6 to 10 p.m., Saturday, April 13, at King Horn Center, according to Amara Egbujor of the association.

The evening celebrates African culture, clothing, music and dance. The evening includes music from Afro Beats, and authentic African snacks and entrees will be served.

Attire for the evening will be formal. The theme is black and gold.

Admission is $10 or $8 for ONU students/staff. You can purchase tickets in McIntosh Center, or via Venmo or CashApp.

ONU’s men’s track team is tabbed to finish fourth and the women picked to finish fifth in the OAC this season.

Men’s team

The Ohio Northern men's track and field program was tabbed for a fourth-place finish in the Ohio Athletic Conference during the 2019 outdoor season in the annual OAC Coaches Preseason Poll, the league announced Friday morning.

The Polar Bears ended fourth after receiving 57 total points from the league's 10 head coaches.

Reigning OAC Champion Mount Union stood atop the poll with 79 points and seven first-place votes. Otterbein claimed second with 74 points and two first-place votes, and John Carroll rounded out the top-three programs with 66 points and the final first-place vote.

A friendly reminder

Some kids are smarter than you. Some have cooler clothes. Some are better at sports, but ... be the nice kid. Here's a message that all Ada elementary students see each day in school. The message is on one of the school walls.

ONU's Ryan Bruns leads "Team Campoli" in all-star game

Joe Campoli and Gale Daugherty were the honorary coaches for the West All-Stars

 Ohio Northern senior All-American Ryan Bruns scored a game-high 19 points and grabbed eight rebounds to lead the West All-Stars to a 104-101 victory over the East All-Stars at the NABC Reece's Division III All-Star Game on Saturday afternoon at the Allen County War Memorial Coliseum.

Bruns was 7-of-15 from the floor and an impressive 4-for-8 from 3-point range to share game-high scoring honors with teammate Nolan Ebel of Augustana (Ill.)

Legendary ONU basketball coaches Joe Campoli and Gale Daugherty were the honorary coaches for the West All-Stars, nicknamed Team Campoli on the scoreboard.

Varsity Singers conclude season with community performance Wednesday

28 singers/dancers, 13-member band, six-member stage crew

Ada High School’s Varsity Singers will conclude their show choir season with a community performance Wednesday, March 20, at 7 p.m. in the high school auditorium. 

This year’s show “Little Red” retells the story of Little Red Riding Hood; featuring CoCo McLaughlin as Red and Nora Dellifield as the Wolf. 

Emma Ferguson, Reece Evans, Alyssa Wince, Josie Poling and Kesewa Akyeampong are also featured soloists.  A free will donation will be collected at the door with proceeds to be used toward purchasing decals and lettering for the Music Booster trailer.

New med for depression

Esketamine is considered the first big depression advance since the approval of Prozac — and it just got approved.

Dozens of antidepressants have been approved over the years. These include Eli Lilly’s “blockbuster” drug Prozac, which was approved in 1987. But there haven't been any new advancements in other types of antidepressants that work in different ways.

Spravato (esketamine), a nasal spray to treat treatment-resistant depression, offers the first new mechanism of action in 30 years to treat major depressive disorder (MDD).
