Red-hot Miller leads AE rally past Ada

HARROD - Mustang senior Spencer Miller scored 26 of his 43 points in the second half to lead host Allen East to a second half comeback win over local rival Ada 72-65 in a Northwest Conference boys basketball shootout Friday night.

The Bulldogs fell to 3-12 and 0-5 in the NWC with the tough loss, while the Mustangs improved to 8-6 and 1-3 in the NWC with their first league victory.

Ada led 57-48 early in the fourth period when Miller led a game-changing 22-2 spurt. Mustang senior Caleb Smelcer reeled off eight points in a row to give AE its first lead since early in the game at 58-57 with 4:35 remaining.

ONU students packed 20,000 meals on Saturday.

It didn't just happen. It took planning, coordination and lots of volunteers to step forward.

The food packets go to the hungry: 1,000 meals to ReStore in Ada, 6,000 meals to the West Ohio Food Bank and the rest to the African nation of Lesotho.

Why do 100 ONU students wear hairnets and disposable gloves? It's for sanitary reasons for when the students packed 20,000 meals in McIntosh Center on Saturday afternoon.

The food packets go to the hungry: 1,000 meals to ReStore in Ada, 6,000 meals to the West Ohio Food Bank and the rest to the African nation of Lesotho.

The nutritious meals consisted of a blend of rice, soy, vegetables, vitamins and minerals.

The meals will be given to those suffering from hunger and malnutrition. Ingredients cost about 27 cents a meal.

Taking a break

These youngsters pitched in to help about 100 ONU students pack 20,000 meals in McIntosh Center on Saturday afternoon.  The reward for them: a brief rest and cookies....and knowing people who need food will get some. Ada audience would say he's all three wrapped into one person

Mr. Entertainer, Mr. Energy, Mr. Stamina...take your pick at what you want to call Ben Vereen, but most in the audience Saturday would say he is all three wrapped up in one person.

Vereen gave a two-hour show of song, dance, and humor at the Freed Center for the Performing Arts, earning two standing ovations at the conclusion.
He and three musicians kept the audience entertained with familiar and more recent songs for two hours without intermission.

His experience in acting showed when he could change his expression and emotion from happy to sad in an instant.

Late run lifts No. 7 Women's Basketball over Capital 64-49

ADA — The No. 7-ranked Ohio Northern women's basketball team needed a late run to keep their perfect season alive as they downed Capital 64-49 Saturday afternoon at the ONU Sports Center.

The Polar Bears move to 19-0 overall and 12-0 in the Ohio Athletic Conference, while the Crusaders fall to 9-10, 5-7.

Senior Britt Lauck (Lima/Shawnee) scored a game-high 15 points, while sophmore Jenna Dirksen (Beavercreek/Carroll) tallied 11 points and junior Amy Bullimore (Morrow/Little Miami) added nine points.

Sophomore Tori Wyss (Ada) came off the bench and grabbed a game-high and career-best eight rebounds to lead Northern defensively.
