Longtime Ada/Liberty Township Fire Chief Jay Epley - Citizen of the Year

He's been on the fire department for nearly 50 years

Longtime Ada/Liberty Fire Chief Jay Epley was named Citizen of the Year during the 51st annual Town and Gown banquet on Monday evening in McIntosh Center ballroom. More than 200 people attended the gala event.

A Hardin County farm boy who served 22 years in the National Guard, Jay is most known to many for his incredibly long run of 38 years as fire chief. He has been a member of the department for nearly 50 years.

In accepting the award he thanked the voters for their support of levies and his wife of 49 years, Linda, and daughters.

ONU hosts election ‘watch party’ beginning at 7 p.m.

An election “watch party” will be held beginning at 7 p.m. on Nov. 8 in The Inn at Ohio Northern in conference rooms 1 and 2. This event presents an opportunity to see how college students react to the presidential election.

The watch party is a culminating event as part of several initiatives held this fall as part of ONU’s involvement in the nationwide Voter Friendly Campus initiative, which strives to encourage student registration and voting.

The Ada Icon caught up with Amos Wolber at the Harold and Nancy Barker home where Amos was filling a tank with fuel for his riding mower. In two months, Amos will be 95 years old...and he's still going strong.

Amos continues to repair lawnmowers, even make the mower parts, if needed. He's been a machinist most of his life, having learned the trade at Lima Locomotive, which turned into Lima Baldwin Hamilton, which turned into Clark Equipment, which finally closed the facility in Lima.

Amos was born in Ada, but lived elsewhere. In his youth, he took farm jobs in various states.

Several Ada students share feelings about stuttering

They created a "billboard" with facts about the disorder

Several Ada School students have created a "billboard" about stuttering.

The billboard gave the students to provide facts about the disorder but more importantly, gave them an opportunity to share about their feelings about stuttering.

They wanted people to know that they are "way more than kids who stutter." They chose not to have their names on the project because it could be about anyone who stutters or struggles with anything.

They created the work with assistance from Occupational Therapist, Lisa Closson and Speech Language Pathologist, Sherry Miller.

Alger Social Center holds election day soup luncheon

The Alger Social Center will hold an election day all-you-can-eat soup bean dinner on Tuesday, Nov. 8.

Serving takes place at the Alger Social Center, Main Street, Alger, beginning at 11 a.m.

The meal includes soup beans, cornbread, dessert and drink. A $5 donation is requested.
