Updating ONU faculty projects

In College of Law and Pharmacy

Several Ohio Northern University faculty are involved in projects completed this spring or are on-going this summer. Those projects follow:

Melissa Kidder, assistant professor of law and director of legal clinics and externships, and her research assistant, third-year law student Amanda Olson, teamed up analyze ONU's transition to online learning.

The project, “5 Small Ways Students Stayed Engaged in Online Learning,” was accepted as a session proposal by CALIcon2020: Law School In the Time of Pandemic, and it was made available on June 5 as an audio presentation.

Face coverings required this fall for indoor events at ONU

Trustees endorse 13-page safety plan to resume in-person education

The Ohio Northern University Board of Trustees endorsed a safety plan to resume in-person education for the fall semester during its June 24 meeting.

The 13-page document covers a wide range of general requirements. Some of those include that faculty, students and staff, guests, visitors, vendors and contractors are required to wear face coverings while indoors in campus buildings.

Faculty, students and staff are encouraged to wear face coverings in outdoor settings where safe social distancing is not possible.

ONU alums play key roles in Space X spacecraft launch

Derick Endicott '12, Alex Strimbu '17, Justin Littell '04

Three Ohio Northern University College of Engineering alumni played important roles in the successful NASA launch of the SpaceX Dragon spacecraft.

Derick Endicott, a 2012 graduate, is a senior test development engineer for SpaceX who ensures that their components can withstand the rigors of spaceflight.

Alex Strimbu, who graduated in 2017, is a SpaceX test development engineer who works on the Merlin engine —the propulsion system for the Falcon 9 booster.

ONU recognizes Juneteenth

Celebrating commemoration of the ending of slavery in the U.S.

FROM ONU FACEBOOK – Today, Ohio Northern recognizes Juneteenth – the oldest nationally celebrated commemoration of the ending of slavery in the U.S. – and celebrates African American freedom and achievement, while encouraging continuous self-development and respect for all cultures.

In the words of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., who spoke on the ONU campus in 1968, “We have come a long, long way but we have a long way to go before racial justice is solved in our nation.” Sadly, that was more than 50 years ago.

Perfect pitch

ONU students use tech to pitch high-tech ideas

In a semester turned upside down due to the COVID-19 pandemic, it’s no surprise that the annual ONU Polar Elevator Pitch competition — the Dicke College of Business Administration’s entrepreneurship showcase — figured out how to not only survive while other events were being canceled, but thrive.

The traditional Polar Elevator Pitch event puts the onus on students’ charisma and persuasive abilities as they present their ideas for a product or service in person.

Students are allotted two minutes to sell their idea to a panel of faculty, students and members of the local business community. Think of it as ONU’s version of the popular television program “Shark Tank.”
