Men's track finishes 5th at All-Ohio

Senior Lucas Shumate and sophomore Ian McVey both posted first place finishes to lead the Ohio Northern men's indoor track and field team at the All-Ohio Championships in Westerville on Saturday afternoon.

The Polar Bears finished fifth out of 18 teams and improve to 39-15 overall.

For the fourth time in four meets, Shumate won the weight throw to lead Northern.

The senior won the event with a toss of 57' 11.75".

McVey also posted a first place finish as he won the 1-mile run in 4:26.

ONU track star holds best time in country

Junior Emily Richards (Delaware/Hayes) led a trio of Ohio Northern athletes as they competed at the Grand Valley State (Mich.) Big Meet on Friday.

Richards posted the sixth fastest time in Div. III history in the 1-mile run and finished second overall and was the first collegiate athlete to cross the finish line in a race that featured schools from Div. I, II and III. 

Richards finished second overall in 4:47.26 in the meet and also shattered the previous Ohio Northern school record held by former Polar Bear Alison Steinbrunner by over 11 seconds.

The junior currently owns the fastest time in the country in both the mile and the 800-meter run.

Bulldogs to face Cardinals at sectionals

WAPAKONETA - The Ada boys basketball team was seeded eighth out of 12 teams at the Allen East/Coldwater Div. IV super sectional drawings held Sunday at Wapakoneta.

The purple and gold (4-15) will face New Bremen (1-17) Wednesday, March 1 in the sectional semifinals at 8 p.m. in Coldwater.

The winner will then face second-seeded Fort Recovery (12-7) in the sectional finals Friday, March 3 at Coldwater. The victor there advances to the Wapak district semifinals March 7. 

Perry was voted the top seed, while USV is third and St. Henry fourth.

Bluffton boys defeat Bulldogs

BLUFFTON - Host Bluffton jumped to an early lead and held off scrappy rival Ada to post a 57-45 Northwest Conference boys basketball victory Friday night.

The defeat dropped the Bulldog record to 4-14 overall and 0-6 in the NWC, while the Pirates improved to 9-9 and 4-2 in the NWC with the victory.

Bluffton ran out to an 8-0 lead behind two game-opening trifectas from freshman Luke Denecker, and never trailed.

Ada rallied within 17-15 at the end of the first period, but could never quite overtake the Pirates.

Late McComb rally dooms 'Dogs

ADA - Visiting McComb forged a 12-0 fourth quarter flurry to upend Ada 49-43 in non-league boys basketball action Saturday night.

The difficult defeat dropped the Bulldog record to 4-15, while the Panthers improved to 3-13 with the victory.

"We had 18 turnovers and shot 29 percent from the foul line, you're not going to beat anyone that way," said Ada first-year head coach Dre White. 

"You have to give McComb credit. They came out and played harder, they knew this was one they could possibly get. They came out and proved it."

Saturday's Contest: Ohio Northern enters Saturday afternoon's matchup ranked No. 5 in the latest D3Hoops.com poll ... Northern is coming off of an 81-57 victory over Heidelberg on Wednesday evening ... With the victory, the Polar Bears clinched the OAC Regular Season title outright and will receive a double-bye in this years OAC Tournament ... Senior Britt Lauck currently leads the team and ranks fourth in the OAC at 15.1 points per game ... Lauck ranks first on the team and in the OAC in free throw percentage (89.8 percent) and leads the team and ranks second in the OAC with 72 assists ... The senior also ranks second in the OAC, shooting 45.3 percent from the 3-point line ...
