Dr. Rebecca L. Casey, associate professor of music at Ohio Northern University, has been named the Ohio Music Teachers Association (OhioMTA) State Certified Teacher of the Year for 2012 in “recognition of excellence in piano instruction and dedication to OhioMTA/MTNA.”

A nationally certified teacher of music, Casey will be honored at the 2012 OhioMTA Conference in Columbus, Ohio, on Saturday, Nov. 10, 2012. Casey is head of the keyboard area in the ONU Department of Music.

Are you an Ada High School cheerleader? Do they have separate squads for different sports?

Yes, I am, and yes, we have a varsity football squad and a varsity and a J.V basketball squad. I cheer varsity for both

The Ohio Northern wrestling team is ranked No. 10 in the Brute-National Wrestling Coaches Association Division III Preseason poll for the 2012-13 season.

The Polar Bears, under 25th-year head coach Ron Beaschler, are the only Ohio Athletic Conference team in the poll, which ranks the top 30 teams in the country.

Individually, three ONU wrestlers are ranked in the top 10 of their respective weight classes.

Ohio Northern sophomore Kristina Klusek was named the Ohio Athletic Conference Women's Soccer Player of the Week for the week of Oct. 22-28.

Klusek scored five goals and added an assist as ONU (10-4-4 overall, 5-3-1 OAC) defeated Wilmington 2-1 and Muskingum 4-1 last week.

She had both goals, including the match-winner with 1:37 left to play, to lead ONU a win at Wilmington on Tuesday.

She then had a hat trick in the first half and added a second half assist as the Polar Bears won 4-1 at Muskingum on Saturday.

This season, Klusek leads ONU in scoring with 33 points on 13 goals and seven assists.

Ohio Northern junior Kevin Weslosky was named the Ohio Athletic Conference Football Special Teams Player of the Week for his effort's in ONU's 20-19 victory over Muskingum on Saturday.

Weslosky averaged 36.0 yards on four punts with a long of 61 yards for ONU (3-5 overall, 3-4 OAC).

This marks the third consecutive week that an Ohio Northern athlete has won OAC Football Player of the Week honors, as senior Tate Humphrey was the Offensive POW on Oct. 22 and freshman Devon Price was the Special Teams POW on Oct. 15.

 

The Aurora chapter of the National Mortar Board Society at Ohio Northern University was honored for excellence at the 2012 Mortar Board National Conference, held this past July in Chicago.

The Aurora chapter received the Silver Torch Award, an honor presented to chapters executing timeliness and dedication while exemplifying the ideals of scholarship, leadership and service. Silver Torch Award recipients are selected based on a review of national records, requiring that the chapter meet all of the national minimum standards and deadlines.

Dr. James Schul, assistant professor of education at Ohio Northern University, has received a Teaching with Primary Sources Midwest Region grant to fund the “Fostering Historical Thinking and Imagination through Primary Source Instruction” project.

 

Ohio Northern University’s Public Relations Student Society of America (PRSSA) received a Star Chapter Award at the 2012 PRSSA National Conference in San Francisco Oct. 12-19.

 

Ohio Northern University’s Public Relations Student Society of America’s (PRSSA) group took third place in Rowan University’s 2012 National Organ Donor Awareness Competition (NODAC).

The six-person team was compromised of 2012 graduates Rebecca Risner, Catherine Clampitt and Elizabeth Fako and current students Katie Hozan, a senior communication arts major from Homerville, Ohio, Katee Johnson, a sophomore communication arts and public relations major from Forest, Ohio, and Jeni Kmic, a senior communication arts major from Delta, Ohio. ONU’s PRSSA chapter was awarded $200 for its third-place finish.
