December 2013

The number 100 might well describe Ada’s top stories of 2013:

Consider:
• 100-year-old Agnes Crates became Citizen of the Year,
•  the Ada Farmers and Merchants Picnic celebrated its 100th year,
•  the Lincoln Highway observed its 100th year.
• Zac Dysert, who plays on a 100-yard field, became a Denver Bronco.
Stories and videos featuring Dysert attracted over 900 hits on the Icon.
• the Ada school levy passed by 100 + votes (actually 104 votes).

The Ada Icon's sister website, Bluffton Icon, also posted its top photos of 2013. We thought Ada viewers might be interested in seeing what took place in Bluffton during 2013.

The Ada Icon's top photos are also posted on the Bluffton Icon. Bluffton's top photos are in an attachment at the bottom of this story.

Over the past 12 months The Icon has recorded many activities in Ada. We've taken over 350 photos, showing life in our small town. As a look-back, we selected some of our favorite photos of the year.

Where do you start when you have over 350 photos to chose from? We've narrowed down our selection to one for each month - it was a tough project.

Please enjoy our New Year's gift to you, as we offer one photo from each month from 2103, plus a bonus photo.

Taxpayers can get the most out of various tax benefits and get a jump on preparing their 2013 federal income tax returns by consulting a newly revised comprehensive tax guide now available on IRS.gov.

No question about it.

My memories of the best Christmas ever come in a package wrapped from stores located in the Lima public square.

I know. It's sounds impossible to viewers born after Neil A. walked on the moon; but it's true.

There was nothing...nothing like going to Lima and shopping downtown for Christmas.
Picture this: Somewhere on South Main, Lima, there was Porter's Music Store. You could actually select a 33 1/3 rpm album, enter a listening booth and listen to the album in privacy. That way you'd know if you wanted to buy it or pass.

Ohio Northern senior Mike King  had a pair of tackles to help Team Stars & Stripes defeat Mexico 29-7 in the 2013 Tazon de Estrellas Saturday afternoon at Estadio Tecnological on the campus ot Tec de Monterrey.

"This was a wonderful week," King said. "Just a terrific experience. Some of the ONU players that had been in this game before told me that it would be worth it and they were right. I will remember this week for the rest of my life.

ONU’s chapter of Pi Sigma Alpha, the national political science honor society, has received a grant of $900 from the national organization to fund a speaker series.

The grant, written by John Curiel, a senior political science major from Waukegan, Ill., and Daniella Chambers, a senior international studies and political science major from Fremont, Ohio, will be spent on establishing an alumni speaker series for the spring semester to highlight the types of jobs one can get in the field of political science.

Several new construction companies built their first residences in Ada on Thursday and Friday. None had building permits; no matter. Each house will be eaten by New Year’s Day, maybe sooner.

Features of these new structures:
Graham crackers
Icing
M and Ms
Gumballs
Lollipops
Chocolate chips
Tootsie rolls

You get the idea. You’ve probably constructed one or two in your lifetime: They are called gingerbread houses.

You may find these models in holiday clothing catalogs, but don’t look for the sweaters.

There are so-so sweaters and then there are just plain ugly sweaters. And, according to the Ada Kiwanis Club, you are looking at the prizes winners – certified ugliest sweaters in Ada this season.

Mike Hood and his wife, Ann, were winners of the Ugliest Sweater contest at the Christmas luncheon of the Ada Kiwanis Club.

During the party, the club held its annual Christmas auction. The auctioneers were Santa (John Berg) Claus and his Chief Elf (Bruce Neely). Fifty gifts were awarded to successful bidders.
