Requests must be in writing by June 15

Ada schools released new guidelines for parents wishing to request teachers for their children for the 2017-18 school year.

The announcement was made in the May elementary newsletter.

The guidelines follow:

• Classroom requests may only be made for grades kindergarten, first, second and third grades.

• Parents may only request one teacher at that grade level, which they do not want their child to have for the upcoming school year.

• All requests must be in writing, signed and dated by the parent, and received by the principal by June 15, 2017.

He and his family have close ties to ONU

Mike DeWine, Attorney General for the State of Ohio, and ONU alumus is this year's speaker at the Pettit College of Law commencement on Sunday, May 21.

He and his family have strong connections to the ONU College of Law. DeWine earned an honorary doctorate from Ohio Northern in 1995. Further, his daughter Alice graduated from ONU’s College of Law in 2008.

The commencement exercises will be held at 2 p.m. on May 21. Doors will open at 12:30 p.m., with the musical prelude at 1:30 p.m. and the academic processional at 1:45 pm. A reception will be held in the College of Law building following the ceremony.

Betty Jane (Twigg) Smith, age 91, died Friday, May 12, 2017 at 7:00 p.m. at Willow Ridge of Bluffton, Ohio.

Betty was born on May 6, 1926 in Knox County, Ohio to John William and Osee Caroline (Cramer) Miller Twigg who preceded her in death. On May 11, 1947 Betty Jane married Albert F. Smith, Jr. who preceded her in death on January 28, 2007. 

She's an art teacher in Jackson-Milton High School

Ohio Northern University Alumna Katelyn Amendolara (BFA/art education ’11) recently traveled to the Middle East to study culture and art as part of curriculum development for the Ohio Department of Education.

Katelyn is currently an art teacher at the Jackson-Milton high school located in North Jackson, Ohio. She teaches 7 through 12 grades and organizes an adult art program throughout the year. Katelyn also organizes an after school art club for students interested in furthering their education. She was awarded an “influential teacher award” in Mahoning county in 2015.

But there's still lots of activities on the calendar

The final weeks of the school year often include a mad rush of events. This year is no different. To keep you up-to-date on the each of the year, here's some important calendar items from the Ada school website:

Hazel C. Umphress, 91, formerly of Ada, OH and currently of Brockport, NY passed peacefully on May 10, 2017. Hazel was born on October 19, 1925 in Rittman, OH. On June 8, 1946 she married Charles Umphress and they shared 56 years of marriage until his death on July 3, 2002.

Hazel was a devoted and loving homemaker. She loved spending time with her siblings and their spouses and did so as much as possible. She was proud of her home and beautiful flower gardens and tended to them faithfully.

DEFIANCE — Defiance College held its commencement ceremonies on Saturday, May 6.

Dr. DeBow Freed, President Emeritus of Ohio Northern University and the University of Findlay, was recognized with an honorary Doctor of Humane Letters.

ADA — Ohio Northern sophomore Emily Hershberger (Jackson Township/Jackson) was named All-Ohio Athletic Conference in women's lacrosse for 2017 in voting conducted by the league's nine head coaches.

Hershberger, a defender, was second on the team with 20 caused turnovers and was third with 34 ground balls this season.

She will enter her junior season as ONU's all-time career leader with 44 caused turnovers and is second with 69 ground balls.

The Polar Bears finished the season 3-13 overall and were 1-7 in OAC play under second-year head coach Beth Hemminger.

Library program begins June 3

Earlier this week, Mid-Ohio Energy Community Fund, Inc. presented a grant to the Ada Public Library for its summer reading program. 

Tim Street, Director of Communications and Member Services for Mid-Ohio  and Natalie Walton, Youth Services Coordinator for the library, paused to celebrate the impact of the grant. 

The summer reading program begins Saturday, June 3.
