The idea of the “pine-chip” piece is to promote the Ada community centennial. Several thousand visitors will be here for the celebration, and the hope is that many of them will retain as souvenirs.
Coin collectors are eager to secure these items, as the issue is limited, and Ada wooden nickels and dimes will become rare in years to come. They also will be interesting replica for future generations here.
ADA — Five Ohio Northern student/athletes received bids to compete in the 2019 NCAA Division III Indoor Track & Field Championships March 8-9 at the Reggie Lewis Center in Boston, Mass.
Senior All-American Ian McVey (Stow/tow-Munroe Falls), senior Avery Ewing (Kokomo, Ind./Eastern), junior All-American Maggie Krause (Chagrin Falls/Kenston), junior Allison Stevens (Naperville, Ill./Central) and freshman Nate Dean (Euclid/Villa Angela Saint Joseph) will all represent the Polar Bears in the meet.
McVey will compete in the 5,000-meter run with the fifth-fastest time in the country at 14:20.45 and will compete on Friday at 7:45 pm.
For its educational programming - There are four chapters of national social sororities at Ohio Northern. In all, approximately 500 students are involved in sororities and fraternities on campus.
Ohio Northern University’s Panhellenic Council was recently recognized for its educational programming.
The group earned a three-star award from the Association of Fraternal Leadership and Values (AFLV) for the Council Compass program. Panhellenic Council is the governing body for sororities at ONU.
The council was touted for its efforts to utilize an annual assessment of the community to guide programming efforts. Endeavors have focused on civic engagement, risk management and professional development.
Beginning on Monday, March 4, Ada schools will begin using three-hour delays as needed, according to Meri Skilliter, superintendent.

In an effort to maintain as much instructional time as we can, and to minimize the number of days we must cancel, the Ada Exempted Village School District will begin to consider and enact a three-hour delay option, beginning March 4.
On a three-hour delay day, all students will still be fed lunch, and the day will NOT be extended.
We will end at our usual ending time, just as we do for two-hour delays.
Ada's council meeting on Tuesday will begin at 6 p.m. and the council will enter executive session at that time, according to Angela Polachek, village administrative assistant.
The regular council meeting will resume immediately following the executive session. The meeting will be held in council chambers.

New heated tobacco devices are not a safe alternative to smoking traditional cigarettes or using electronic cigarettes, according to a new study.
This study directly compared the lung cell damage caused by e-cigarette and cigarette use to this new type of device, which heats solid tobacco to create a nicotine vapor that the user inhales. The conclusion? The heated tobacco vapor from these new devices was highly toxic to healthy lung cells — just like cigarette smoke.

COLDWATER - Top seed St. Henry pulled away from upset-minded Ada with big first and fourth quarters to post a hard-fought 64-47 win in boys Div. IV sectional championship action Friday night at Coldwater.
With the loss, the 11th-seeded Bulldogs finished their season 6-18. MAC champion St. Henry (20-3) advanced to the district semifinals at Wapakoneta with the win.
SH outscored Ada by a combined total of 41-20 in the first and fourth periods. But the Bulldogs won the middle quarters, 27-23.
Zach Niekamp, a 6-1 senior, scored 23 of his game-high 27 points in the second half to lead the Redskins to victory.
Ohio Northern senior Jenna Dirksen (Beavercreek/Carroll) has been awarded All-Ohio Athletic Conference First-Team accolades in women's basketball for the 2018-19 season, the league office announced Wednesday morning.
This season, Dirksen led the Polar Bears and ranked fifth in the OAC with 14.2 points per game. She also paced the Orange and Black with 132 made field goals, 85 made free throws, 66 assists, and 35 steals in a team-high 857 minutes during the campaign.
