The Ada High School girls basketball team was seeded 10th out of 13 teams at the Div. IV Shawnee/Spencerville super sectional drawing held by conference call Sunday, January 30.

Fourth-ranked New Knoxville (17-2) was voted the number one seed, with Marion Local (14-5) tabbed second by the coaches and Minster (11-7) third.

The Lady Bulldog cagers (5-12) will visit fifth-seeded Midwest Athletic Conference foe Parkway (11-7) Wednesday, February 16 at 7 p.m. 

The Ada/Parkway winner takes on fourth seed New Bremen (13-5) at Shawnee Saturday, February 19 at 3 p.m. NB received a first round bye.

The top seven seeds are all from the Midwest Athletic Conference.

The Leipsic at Ada High School girls basketball game originally scheduled for Thursday, February 3 has been moved to Monday, January 31 at 6 p.m. to avoid the impending snowstorm.

The Hardin County Democratic Party will host its annual Presidents' Day Luncheon on Saturday, February 26, 2022, from noon until 2:00 p.m. at the Kenton Moose Lodge (lower level) located at 801 West Lima Ave., Kenton, OH.

Candidates scheduled to speak include John Cranley (Cincinnati Mayor) for Governor, Cheryl Stevens (Cuyahoga County Council) for Lt. Governor, Jeff Crossman (State Representative) for Attorney General and Jeff Sites (Army veteran and warehouse manager) for US Congress.

Ada Area Chamber of Commerce director

Deb Curlis will step down from her position as the director of the Ada Area Chamber of Commerce at the end of February 2022. The Icon asked her for fifteen minutes to review her work with the chamber. 

Were you a chamber member before you became director?

I was the chamber representative for Community Health Professionals. When I first came to Ada to work, Matt Brown was the chamber president. He got me involved as a board member. Shortly after that, he took a job in Bellefontaine and I took over as president to finish out his term. I was re-elected and served five years as president.

 

 Edna M. Griffith, age 67, passed away on Sunday, January 30, 2022, at her residence in Roundhead. 

She was born on November 15, 1954, in Roundhead, Ohio to the late William and Hester (Prater) Wireman.  On September 8, 1971, Edna married Melvin “Bud” Griffith, Jr.  and he preceded her in death on October 4, 2015.

Surviving is her daughter, Darlene (Matthew) Downing of Roundhead; three grandchildren: Cody Griffith, Logan Smith, and Dylan Griffith; five great grandchildren; three brothers: James (Carolyn) Wireman of Lima, Paul (Linda) Wireman of Alger and Adam Wireman of Alger; and a sister, Susan Sneary of Roundhead.

Led by two wins from freshman Lily Baumgartner, the Ada High School swim teams fared well at the North Central Ohio Swim League meet hosted by Colonel Crawford (CC) on Saturday, January 29.

The Lady Bulldogs finished a solid fourth in the eight-team event, while the Ada boys came in seventh.

Meet host CC won the girls title, while Upper Sandusky captured the boys crown. CC edged the Rams in the combined girls/boys score by 18.5 points.

Baumgartner won the 100 butterfly and 100 backstroke races to lead the Ada girls.

Junior Carlie Oldfield finished second in the 50 freestyle, and touched third in the 100 backstroke.

Despite being short-handed, the visiting Ada High School boys basketball team stayed close to Ottoville for three quarters before losing 64-40 in a non-conference game Saturday night, January 29.

Ada hung within striking distance down 43-30 heading to the final period. 

But the Big Green closed on a 21-10 note to win going away.

Ada junior guard Spencer Wall scored five early points, but took a hit to the head in the first quarter and missed the rest of the game.

"We held up pretty well considering we were without him," said first-year Bulldog head coach Vince Halliday. "We were only down 13 after three.

The Ada HIgh School wrestling team battled at the two-day, 24-team Sally George Invitational tournament with several big schools hosted by Marion Pleasant Friday and Saturday. 

Marion Pleasant won the double-elimination tournament with 208 points. Jonathan Alder took second at 192.5. Ada tied for 23rd place with Sugarcreek Garaway.

Bulldog sophomore Clayton McClain was the lone Ada placer, coming in sixth in the 126 lbs. division. He posted a 2-3 record in the two-day tournament. 

Seeded second, he got a first round bye and won his first match by pinning Tony Cummins of Indian Lake at 3:25.

The West Ohio Food Bank has released a monthly food distribution schedule for the remainder of 2022, including four Hardin County events at Ohio Northern University Dial-Roberson Stadium Front Lot. (Complete schedule is attached.)
