The Ada High School boys basketball squad fell victim to a 28-0 first half run by the visiting Arlington team and lost 60-45 in a Tuesday night non-league game on January 18.

The Bulldogs tied the game 8-8 on a Cayden Murphy reverse layup, but then plunged into a long scoreless drought. Arlington authored 28 unanswered points bridging the first two quarters, and never trailed after being behind 6-3 early.

The Red Devils led 38-11 at intermission, capitalizing on 14 Bulldog turnovers to net many easy baskets. Ada played better in the second half, winning the final two quarters 34-22.

Ada Youth wrestler Langston McClain, a 6th grader, placed first in the Division 4 80lbs bracket at the OAC Grade School Marysville District Championships on Sunday, January 16.

McClain will wrestle at the OAC Grade School State Championships in Youngstown, Ohio in March.

He is a member of the Ada Youth Wrestling Club, which provides coaching for kindergarten through 6th grade wrestlers of all experience levels. The club is part of the Miami Valley Kids Wrestling Association, which includes more than 70 clubs participating in weekly tournaments from January through February/ Early March.

Ohio Northern Alumni have been invited to attend a Polar Bear Party during the weekend of Feb. 25-27. Across the country and virtually, alumni have opportunities to celebrate being a Polar Bear by reminiscing and connecting.

The Office of Alumni Egagement notes, "We will be celebrating in-person at events across the country and virtually where you are. You can host your own Polar Bear Weekend event at home with family and nearby friends, or hop on Facebook to join ONU’s virtual community online."

Playing at home, the Ada High School girls basketball team put together a 22-0 run early in the first half and went on to beat Hardin County rival Ridgemont 52-19 in a match Monday night, January 17.

The Bulldog girls fell behind 4-0, then reeled off 22 unanswered points to take command. Ada led 35-13 at the half and was never threatened in playing its best game of the season.

The Lady Bulldogs improved to 5-11 with the non-conference victory, while the Lady Gophers dropped to 3-11 after the lopsided loss.

W. Thomas Crowe, age 81, passed away peacefully at his home on Sunday, January 16, 2022, after a courageous battle with brain cancer.

He was born on February 25, 1940, in Lima, Ohio to the late William Daniel and Ruth (Thomas) Crowe.  On March 12, 1960, Tom married Sharon Sue Moore and she survives in Lima.

Tom was a farmer and a United Methodist Agricultural Missionary to the Democratic Republic of the Congo.  He was a member of the First United Methodist Church of Alger.  Tom was a former member of the USV School Board.

With four girls winning races, the Ada High School swim teams competed well in the 10-team Colonel Crawford Sprint Invitational meet at Crestline on Saturday, January 15.

The Bulldog girls finished a strong fourth out of 10 teams, while the Ada boys came in sixth out of nine squads.

Upper Sandusky swept the boys and girls team titles.

"This was a sprint meet, so we got to try out a few new events and have fun with the lineups," said Ada head coach Katey Stuart. "Overall, everyone did a fantastic job, and we had a lot of great swims," she added.

Duane L. Helms, Sr., age 64, passed away on Saturday, January 15, 2022, at 9:25 p.m. at the Baptist Health, Louisville, KY.

He was born on December 13, 1957, in Lima, Ohio to Victor and Patricia (Binkley) Helms, who preceded him in death.   

Duane is survived by his two children: Duane (Sarah) Helms, Jr. of Cox’s Creek, KY and Misty (Wade) Fearing of North Carolina; six grandchildren; and a sister: Kaylene Evans of Ada.

He was preceded in death by his daughter, Monica Thornton; and two sisters: Theresa and Monica Helms.

Duane worked at Ford Motor Company, Lima.  He was an avid Harley-Davidson fan and loved to ride.

The January 13 Ada Board of Education meeting included the 161st annual reorganization meeting and a regular meeting with reports from the high school and elementary school principals, as well as the treasurer and superintendent.

The board established roles and dates for the upcoming year:

  • Ted Griffith was sworn in as a new board member
  • Amy Mullins was elected as board president
  • Matt Gossman was elected as board vice-president
  • Meetings will take place at 6 p.m. on the third Tuesday of each month at the Board of Education office, 725 W. North Ave.
  • The Treasurer and Superintendent were authorized to act on specified financial matters on behalf of the school district.
