ODOT District 1 has issued the following highway construction update for the week of August 15. Outlined work is weather permitting.

State Route 81 on the east side of Township Road 125, approximately one mile west of the village if Dunkirk, will close on Monday, August 15, for approximately two days for a culvert replacement.

TRAFFIC IMPACT
Detour: U.S. 68 to SR 701 to SR 235 back to SR 81 (see attached map).

Are you ready for some freshpersons? Ohio Northern University new student move-in is less than a week away. During August 17-21 new undergraduate and new law students will first arrive on campus, followed by returning students.

An early opportunity see and meet new students is ACE Community Day on August 20. Ada Community Engagement Day, or ACE Day, is a university tradition held on the Saturday of Welcome Weekend.

The university details "ACE Day provides an opportunity for incoming freshmen to serve the Ada community, their new home for the next four, five or six years. Projects include a variety of tasks, such as painting, gardening, washing fire trucks and more."

Exercise is a critical piece to overall health. The Heart Foundation provides a list of the top 10 reasons why someone does not exercise.  The top three are: I am too tired, I can’t afford a gym and I don’t have time.  

So, could concentrated time exercising be a potential solution, giving credence to the notion of a weekend warrior?

After 21-plus years as Ada’s police chief and more than 38 years as an Ohio Law Enforcement Officer, Michael Harnishfeger has announced his retirement effective the end of June, 2023.

Chief Harnishfeger informed Mayor Retterer and Village Council of his intentions during an executive session of council on August 9. According to Chief Harnishfeger the Village of Ada will begin looking for his replacement immediately with plans for the village to employ the Ohio Association of Chiefs of Police in their search, including an assessment center to be conducted by the chief’s association for the finalists, towards the end of 2022.

Perseid Meteor shower viewing is scheduled for Saturday evening, August 13 at the McGuffey Park located at the East end of South Street in McGuffey.

Members of the Hardin County Astronomy Club will be there at dusk unless it is very cloudy. The club notes, "Sunday night is the inclement weather night. If we get clouded out remember that Perseid Meteors can be seen up until the end of August, so get out any clear night or early morning. Maybe you can see a fireball!"

Leah E. Casey, 2017 Allen East High School graduate and formerly of Ada, recently earned a Master of Studies in English “With Distinction” from The Queen’s College, The University of Oxford, England.

Casey is currently employed full time at Shearman and Sterling LLP, an international law firm in Manhattan, where she is preparing for law school.

The August 13 Farmers & Merchants Picnic at Ada War Memorial Park includes several opportunities to compete including a 3-on-3 basketball tournament.
