Pillar of light explained

This "pillar of light" was seen by area residents on January 10 and beautifully photographed by P. Rae Staton on SR 235 between Ada and Bluffton. The phenomenon occurs when light at ground level is refracted by ice crystals suspended in the air. Cold, still conditions are required.
