Dr. Marquart presents paper, chairs session at national conference
Dr. Jed E. Marquart, Ohio Northern University professor of mechanical engineering, presented a paper and chaired a technical session at the Sixth Annual AIAA Flow Control Conference, sponsored by the American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics (AIAA). The conference was held in New Orleans, LA, on July 25-28 with more than 1,500 engineers and scientist in attendance, and approximately 750 technical papers were presented.
Marquart chaired a technical session entitled “Boundary Layer Control.” He also presented a paper detailing some of his recent research. The title of his paper was “CFD Investigation of the Drag Effects of Heating and Cooling Cylinders in Crossflow.” The paper was presented in a session entitled “Bluff Body Wake Control.” The goal of the research was to use computational fluid dynamics (CFD) to analyze the aerodynamic effects of heating and cooling a cylinder surface relative to the freestream air. In particular, the primary area of interest was the effect on the drag coefficient.
Marquart performed the research, in conjunction with Derick Endicott, a 2012 mechanical engineering graduate from Belle Center, Ohio, and Carolyn Dear, the manager of support and consulting at Pointwise, Inc.
Endicott’s participation was funded by the Ohio Space Grant Consortium during the summer of 2011 to work on this project. He then continued the work during the fall and spring semesters as special topics courses. As a result of his experience, Endicott is currently working as a summer intern at Wright-Patterson Air Force Base, and will be pursuing graduate studies in aerospace engineering at the University of Cincinnati in the fall.
