Here's what's happening at local Ada and Alger churches over Christmas week:
The First Baptist Church of Ada will have a Christmas Eve candlelight service at 7 p.m. on Tuesday, Dec 24. A Christmas Day Gathering will be at 10 a.m. on Wednesday, Dec. 25, with no sunday school. Rev. Jack Duffy is pastor. The church is located at 350 W. North Ave. (State Route 81).
Lifelong Ada resident, Cathy Cole, was recognized by the village as Mayor David Retterer designated Wednesday, Dec. 18, as "Councilor Cathy Cole Day in the Village of Ada."
Cole is going off the Ada council at the end of the year after serving on it for 14 years.
The wording of the mayoral proclaimation designating the special day follows:
Whereas, Cathy Cole has served as a counselor for the Village of Ada for 14 years, and
Whereas, Cathy has served as the chair of the personnel committee for most of those years of service with the Village of Ada, and
Shaina Phillips, an Ada High School student, stands in front of Elaine Garber, high school teacher. The two were among countless Ada students and teachers dressed in "plaid" on Wednesday. It was the dress code of the day during the last week of school in 2019.
At least one large flock of sandhill cranes was spotted recently in the skies over Ada.
To be more exact it's a construction, dance, sedge, siege or swoop of cranes – not a flock.
Jodi Brauen, on Tom Fett Road, between Bluffton and Ada, shared this photo and the Icon has heard from other viewers that they have also spotted these large birds in the area.

To everything, there is a season. And I'm not talking about the fall, winter, spring, summer... or even the Christmas season, but the seasons that come with motherhood. These seasons are typified by little things, like diapers or high chairs, soccer balls or pom poms.
If you have a teenager, you may be in the season of door-slamming and hormones. If you have a growing boy, you may be in the season of monthly shoe-shopping, as you try to keep up with your son's ever-growing feet.
For me personally, I'm in the season of diapers, sleep deprivation and a dancing chicken toy.
