Memorial Day weekend 2024 news schedule

The Ada Icon has a holiday schedule for Memorial Day weekend 2024. New content will appear on Friday and, except for breaking news, pause until Tuesday morning. Newsgathering will continue through the weekend, including Ada High School graduation on Sunday and Memorial Day ceremonies at Woodlawn Cemetery on Monday.

ONU designated a Purple Star Campus

May 23, 2025__The Ohio Department of Higher Education has designated Ohio Northern University as a Collegiate Purple Star campus for its efforts to support students with military backgrounds.

Ada junior Jenna Bassitt repeated as a first team all-district selection for Div. IV softball in voting recently conducted by the area coaches.

Bassitt led Ada to an 18-4 overall record and second place in the Northwest Conference with a 7-1 mark in 2024. 

She posted a 17-4 pitching record with an earned run average of just over one run per game. She also led the team in batting average, on base pct., runs scored and stolen bases.

Bassitt struck out 196 batters in 139 innings pitched. Her 17 victories set a program record for wins in a season.

Lions Club meets 2024 scholarship winners

On May 22 the Ada Lions Club hosted Ada scholarship winners for 2024 at a dinner meeting.  Scholarship winners are from left to right: SaraLyn Myers, Autumn Andreason, Ashlyn Madison, Abid Kahn, Josie Phillips and Ella Marshall. 

The six scholarship winners introduced their parents, talked about their school activities, their college major and the university that they plan to attend in the fall. 

The Lions Club extends their best wishes to all these students.  Since 2000, the Ada Lions Club has awarded $111,700 in scholarships to 123 students. 

Scholarship chair is Bob Simmons. Committee members also include Julie Simmons, Fred Reichert, Teresa Rush and Gary Ludwig.
