ONU to present Carrie Newcomer
Ohio Northern University’s Freed Center for the Performing Arts will present Carrie Newcomer on Saturday, Feb. 9, at 7:30 p.m.
Newcomer is a rare breed of singer/songwriter, the kind who illuminates life with startling depth, humor and clarity. She has the ability to blend her rich alto voice with a poetic lyricism on a skillfully arranged and performed collection of folk root tracks, with Appalachian and classical influences.
Newcomer has produced 13 solo albums and has received numerous awards for her music and related charitable activities. She has done numerous collaborations with authors, academics, philosophers and musicians.
In 2009 and 2011, she traveled to India as a cultural ambassador; her trips included musical performances organized by the U.S. State Department. In 2012, she made a similar trip to Kenya on behalf of the Interfaith Hunger Initiative. Her range of causes, activities, collaborations and philosophies significantly influences her music.
In addition, Newcomer will conduct a workshop, “Our Lives as Sacred Story: A Creative Exploration Of the Heart and Spirit of Our Experience,” in ONU’s Mathile Center on Feb. 9 at 2 p.m.
Free and open to the public, this workshop will use song, conversation, creative writing, and group and individual experiences to explore participants’ stories with a spiritual lens.
Tickets are $15 for general admission and $7 for ONU students and children. The Freed Center box office is open Monday through Friday from noon to 5 p.m., and Saturday from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.
Phone orders are accepted with American Express, MasterCard, VISA or Discover by calling 419-772-1900. Tickets also are available online at www.freedcenter.com
