Sharon MacKenzie tells Kiwanis about naturalization ceremony in Findlay

Myrna McCurdy called the weekly meeting of the Ada Kiwanis Club to order at 12:01 p.m. in Conference Room #7, McIntosh Center, ONU.

The invocation was offered by Jon Umphress

The member birthdays of Harold Friesner, July 21; John Berg, July 25; and Bob McCurdy, July 29 were noted.

It was noted that recent Chicken BBQ was a very successful project.

In business:
-Treasurer Bryan Marshall updated members on club finances.
-A report was heard from Claudia Crawford, and sent to Brian Myers, concerning the “Bringing Up Grades” program.
-Joe Ferguson reported that the re-scheduling of the Memorial Tree is set for Wednesday August 7 at War Memorial Park. with Charles Van Dyne, Anita Dearth not cleared yet.
-Dawn Christensen, Executive Director of The Sight Center would like to present a program for us.  Secretary Brian Myers has all of the information if you are interested in this program
-Joe Ferguson updated members on the Village Sign project. There was a problem with utilities which has been addressed. The Village of Ada will dig the holes and Joe is hopeful that the sign will be installed this week.
-Mike Hood will make the basket for the Ohio Kiwanis Convention from the Ada club.
-Sign-up sheets for convention basket room and the Farmers and Merchants Picnic Pedal Tractor Pull were circulated.

Kiwanis Education Minute:
For the Eliminate Project Kiwanis International is hoping that each member can contribute $750 US dollars for this project and become a Model Club. As of March 16th, the Carolinas: 24, Texas/Oklahoma 20, Southwest 19, and all together 360+ Clubs have made the challenge.

Something to consider:
From “Live and Love and Pass it On” from a 26 year old, “I’ve learned that if you try to be perfect, you’ll be frustrated all of the time.” And from a 29 year old, “I’ve learned that whenever I’m in a big hurry, the person in front of me isn’t.”

Sharon MacKenzie presented program about a recent program she attended in which the United States District Court, Northern District of Ohio, held a naturalization ceremony at The University of Findlay.

The Honorable Vernelis K. Armstrong, United States Magistrate, Northern District of Toledo, presided.

Christina Terry, a senior at The University of Findlay, adjourned the court.
Sandra Agans Krueger, mezzo soprano, guest vocalist, offered the National Anthem and “America the Beautiful,” accompanied by the Riverdale High School band.
Douglas J. Everett, The University of Findlay junior, public relations chair of the UF Student Government Association will lead the Pledge of Allegiance.
Zoe Wahbeh, senior, Findlay High School, addressed the Benefits of Citizenship. Hancock County Seniors Liberty Benton, Marisa Burkett; McComb, Briana Herr and Van Buren, Dylan Sexton will address the Obligations of Citizenship.
The Riverdale High School band, under the direction of Beth Voll, Director of Bands, Riverdale High School will provide music for the program.
The John Hancock Chapter, Ohio Society, Sons of the American Revolution led by Mr. Daniel Haas, presented the Colors.
Catherine Garcia-Feehan, Esq., law clerk to the Honorable Judge David A. Katz, offered remarks, and Tina Brown, United States District Court jury and naturalization clerk, presented certificates to new citizens.

Sharon shared about the requirements for U.S. citizenship and noted it was an impressive and moving ceremony.

The United States has a long history of welcoming immigrants from all parts of the world.  America values the contributions of immigrants who continue to enrich this country and preserve its legacy as a land of freedom and opportunity. 
Deciding to become a U.S. citizen is one of the most important decisions in an individual’s life.  If you decide to apply to become a U.S. citizen, you will be showing your commitment to the United States and your loyalty to its Constitution.  In return, you are rewarded with all the rights and privileges that are part of U.S. citizenship. 

The Ada Kiwanis Club meets each Tuesday at 12 noon at McIntosh Center, ONU. Guests are always welcome.
