ONU engineering senior receives national honor

Ohio Northern University senior Bridget Davis, an electrical engineering major from Newark, Ohio, has been awarded the John W. Estey Outstanding Power and Energy (PES) Scholar Award. The scholarship is from the Institute of Electrical and Electronic Engineers (IEEE) PES Society Scholarship Plus Initiative.

Davis was only one of seven individuals to receive the scholarship. In its letter to ONU, the IEEE Power & Energy Society described Davis as a “high-achieving undergraduate student in an electrical engineering program who is committed to exploring the power and energy engineering field through both coursework and career experiences.”

Davis is the president of the IEEE student branch at Ohio Northern University. For her senior capstone project, she designed a solar power system as part of a multidisciplinary team for a missionary group in Haiti. She also has served as a student intern at American Electric Power since 2011.

As the John E. Estey Outstanding PES Scholar Award recipient, Davis received $7,000 for school expenses and 12 months of complimentary membership in IEEE and IEEE PES Society. She also will receive up to $1,000 in a travel honorarium to attend the IEEE PES Annual Meeting. This event will be held July 27-31, 2014, at the Gaylord National Resort and Convention Center in National Harbor, Md.

IEEE is the world’s largest professional association dedicated to advancing technological innovation and excellence for the benefit of humanity. IEEE and its members inspire a global community through IEEE’s highly cited publications, conferences, technology standards, and professional and educational activities. ONU is in the IEEE Region 2, which includes Ohio (except Toledo), Pennsylvania, Delaware, the District of Columbia, New Jersey (southern), Virginia (northern) and West Virginia. Khalid Al-Olimat, professor and chair of the electrical and computer engineering and computer science department and the IEEE-Lima Section chair, serves as the advisor of the IEEE Student Chapter at ONU.

The John W. Estey Outstanding PES Scholar Award has been made possible by the support of the S&C Foundation and is named after John W. Estey, one of only three chief executive officers in S&C Electric Company’s 100-year history. He is an IEEE fellow, a past director of IEEE, and past IEEE Power & Energy Society president. S&C Electric Company is a global provider of equipment and services for electric power systems.

“I had the privilege to be the recipient of the PES Scholarship Plus Initiative and John W. Estey Outstanding PES Scholar Award sponsored by IEEE,” Davis said.
