By Grant Pepper

Hello Icon readers,

My name is Grant Pepper and I am a senior multimedia journalism major at Ohio Northern University. I am looking forward to writing for The Ada Icon this year, as I have a great passion for covering not only Ohio Northern, but also the Ada community as a whole.

I am a co-sports director at WONB 94.9 FM, ONU’s campus radio station, where I broadcast Ada High School football, Ada girls and boys high school basketball, and Ohio Northern baseball and softball.

As a sports director, I also produce and do all the preparation work for each broadcast, to make sure they sound as professional as possible. I also produce a weekly sports talk show, The Pep Talk, which airs on 94.9 FM every Friday at 8:30 a.m. I have really enjoyed covering Ada and Ohio Northern athletics for the past four years, and have developed some great working relationships with community coaches and administration.

Along with radio duties, I am also the sports editor for the Northern Review, Ohio Northern’s online student newspaper. I write a story or two per week, covering everything from the ONU women’s basketball team’s NCAA Tournament run last spring to how student-athletes feel kneeling during the National Anthem would be perceived at ONU this fall. I have written for the newspaper for four years and have made a concerted effort to cover the meaningful, relevant stories that our students care about the most.

My goal is to get a job in the journalism field after graduation. Since I was little, my dream has always been to be a reporter -- although that word has changed meaning significantly over the years, and I am working to adapt with the times like everyone else. I have interned at the Dayton Daily News the past two summers, covering local news.

I am very thankful for the opportunity to get to write for The Icon in the coming months, and am looking forward to telling the stories of the people who make this school and community great. I can’t wait to get going!
