OTTOVILLE - The Ada softball team scored eight runs in the fourth inning and cruised to a 14-0 win in its delayed season opener at non-league foe Ottoville Wednesday evening.
Freshman Leona Dalton fired a five-inning shutout in her debut, and aided her own cause with two hits, a run batted in and three runs scored. Dalton struck out five and walked none in the run-rule shortened, complete-game effort.
The Lady Bulldogs scored two runs in the first inning, then added one in the second and three more in the third to build a 6-0 cushion. They then put the game out of reach with eight more in the fourth frame.
Junior Raina England smacked two hits, scored three times and drove in three runs to help pace the Ada offense. Senior Nikki Lehsten also collected three RBI, scored twice and walked.
The Bulldogs drew a dozen walks and stole seven bases. England and Dalton each swiped a pair of bags.
Senior Olivia Alexander scored twice, knocked in a run and had a single. She also walked two times and stole a base. Classmate Maddie Gossard contributed a hit and an RBI.
Junior Alexis Ennis singled, scored a run and drove in one. She also walked once, had a sacrifice and stole one base. Senior Teara Coulson knocked in two runs, scored once and had a hit.
Senior Sydney Newland walked twice, scored a run and plated another. Sophomore Sidney Gossard added an RBI.
Freshman Aubrey Madison also scored a run. Classmate Tori Green was hit by a pitch and frosh Kiersten Cortez drew a walk.
Ada out-hit Ottoville, 9-2. The Bulldogs left seven runners on base compared to two by the Big Green.
After having its first four games postponed by inclement weather this past week, Ada improved to 1-0 this season with the blowout victory.
