Ada High School junior, Melina Woods, recently competed in the AAU National Volleyball Tournament at the ESPN Wide World of Sports in Orlando, Florida. She and her teammates from Elite Volleyball Training Center in Plain City, Ohio, placed third out of 114 teams.
Woods and her teammates from 16 Elite Black made it to the semi-finals with a 12-0 record before falling in three sets to the eventual champions from Nebraska.
In four days of play, 16 Elite Black defeated teams from Texas, Washington, South Carolina, California, Michigan, Pennsylvania, North Carolina, and South Dakota.
Sandy Neely has been helping kids learn to swim for 48 years. Yes, 48 years. Swim lessons began this week, and will continue next week, at the Ada pool for 65 people who registered. Sandy, who was named Citizen of the Year in Ada last fall, is director of the Hardin County Red Cross Learn to Swim program. She has helped people learn to swim elsewhere and, since 1974, in Ada. The Village Garden is full of edible food, drawing growers from far and wide.
Pictured are Shaheed Khan and his mother, Sherin, immigrants from Bangladesh, who are growing some foods common to Americans, such as cucumbers and tomatoes, as well as some vegetables and herbs that are hard to find in the stores here.
The garden, located behind Liberty National Bank, is run by ReStore Community Center.
The Khans have lived in Ada for about a year. Shaheed will be a senior in high school here this fall.

The Varsity Singers are putting their "heart and soul" into working hard this week to learn this year's competition show.
Under the direction of their new vocal director, Scott Henning, instrumental director, Jonathan Lischak, and new choreographer Zach Triscari, the VS plans to compete at Piqua, Findlay, Medina, Marion Harding, Marysville, as well as host their annual Music Feast show choir competition this school year.
Ada Alligators swim team finished third of eight teams in this past weekend’s Western Ohio Aquatic League meet held at Bluffton. In the girls’ standings, Ada finished fifth overall. In the boys’ standings Ada finished third overall.
