Shirley’s Gourmet Popcorn birthday party

Shirley's Gourmet Popcorn Co., Bluffton, celebrates Shirley's birthday on Saturday, June 22, with a day full of family-friendly events, according to Pete and Kim Suter.

Carnival games and buy-one-get-one specials highlight the event held downtown Bluffton, with 100 percent of sales being donated Lima Symphony Storetime program.

Ohio Governor Mike DeWine today sent a letter to U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) Secretary Sonny Perdue requesting a USDA Secretarial disaster designation for Ohio amid heavy rainfall impacting Ohio farmers.

In his letter, Governor DeWine notes that record rainfall through the spring planting season has been devastating to Ohio farmers, with flooding and saturated fields preventing them from planting crops. Only 50 percent of Ohio’s corn crop and 32 percent of Ohio’s soybean crop have been planted as of June 10, 2019.

The Hardin County OSU Extension Master Gardener Volunteers along with the assistance of the Men’s Garden Club are sponsoring “An Evening Garden Affair” on Monday, June 24, at the Friendship Gardens of Hardin County, 960 W. Kohler St., Kenton.  

The event is from 6 to 9 p.m. and will feature Sarah Noggle of OSU Extension-Paulding County with a program about how to grow vegetables with limited space.

Ohio Northern seniors Drew Fox (Solon), Mitch Groves (Fishers, Ind./Bishop Chatard), and Anthony Pavone (Bainbridge/Kenston) have been named to the Intercollegiate Men's Lacrosse Coaches Association's All-West Region squads for the 2019 season, the national office announced.

New Leaf Landscape and Garden Center, 0395 State Route 235, Ada, has opening in its fairy garden workshop.

The workshops start at 10 a.m. and 1 p.m., Saturday, June 29. Space is limited. Persons interested in attending either one may call or email for a spot.

The workshop will focus on creating a home for fairies in gardens. Participants may bring their own pot or container or purchase one at New Leaf.

The New Leaf staff will provide soil, and participants will purchase plants and accessories.

Children and adults are welcome to participate. An adult must accompany children.

Alexandra Mercorelli of North Canton, Ohio, proved the power of perseverance through her graduation from Ohio Northern University this spring.

She also earned a prestigious Dorothy Morrison Memorial Scholarship from Alpha Mu Tau fraternity, which advances professionals in the clinical laboratory sciences, for graduate study.

Mercorelli, a North Canton High School graduate, earned a bachelor’s degree in medical laboratory science after sitting out much of the previous year for surgery and rehabilitation to have a cancerous tumor removed from under her shoulder blade.
