William "Gunny" Sherman was retired from the U.S. Marine Corp
William G. “Gunny” Sherman, age 72, passed away on Thursday, Nov. 5, 2020, at 5:24 p.m. at Shawnee Manor, Lima.
He was born on Oct. 4, 1948, in Binghamton, New York, to the late Percy James and Ruth Margaret (Pembleton) Sherman. On Feb. 19, 2005, William married Ann Louise Wolfe and she survives in Ada.
William was a Gunnery Sergeant in United States Marine Corp and he served three tours in Vietnam. He retired from the United States Marine Corp after serving for over 21 years. After retiring from the military William drove truck for over 15 years. He was a member of the Wapakoneta VFW Post #8445 and the Lima Fraternal Order of the Eagles Post #370.
Also surviving are two step daughters: Ronalee Reed of Waynesfield and Michelle Thomas of Ada; and three step grandchildren: Jordan Thomas, Alexandra Thomas and Alissa Thomas; three great grandsons; and a sister, Ruth Cornelius of Wellsville, N.Y.
He was preceded in death by two brothers and three sisters.
Attendance will be restricted at the funeral and visitation based on space to accommodate social distancing requirements. Face coverings must be worn while attending visitation and service.
Private family services will be held at Hanson-Neely-Allison Funeral & Cremation Services, Ada.
Burial will be in Woodlawn Cemetery, with graveside military rites conducted by the Ada VFW Post #9381 Honor Guard.
In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made to Shawnee Manor, 2535 Ft. Amanda Road, Lima, Ohio 45804.
