Ed Henning coached at Harding High School
Coach Ed Henning, age 73 of Marion, passed away peacefully at his home surrounded by his family on Tuesday, April 19, 2022.
Ed was born on November 2, 1948 in Celina, the son of Edwin Roy and Bernice Irene (Boice) Henning. He graduated from St. Marys Memorial High School where he lettered in football. He received his Bachelor of Education from Findlay College and Master’s Degree from Ashland University.
It was at the Beer Barrel in Ottawa where Ed met his soulmate and future wife, Jo Ann Krieger. The couple married on May 20, 1972 and have cherished nearly 50 years of marriage.
He worked at Amerikid Daycare in Findlay for one year before moving to Marion in 1975. He taught science and OWE at Harding High School for 35 years. Upon retiring, he accepted a job at Tri-Rivers where he taught for 5 years. He retired once again and then tutored at Rushmore Academy for 2 years until his health status did not allow him to continue teaching.
While at Harding High School he coached 110 seasons of athletics which included football, wrestling (state qualifier), track, cross country, and girls’ basketball. He also coached 7th and 8th grade baseball for 2 years in Dempsey Middle School and 6th grade football in Delaware. In 2019 Coach Ed Henning was honored and inducted into the Marion Harding Athletic Hall of Fame. As a coach and teacher, for 42 years, he was selfless in his dedication and development of kids inspiring and encouraging them to dig deep and work hard. “Hen Dog” will forever be remembered for his “bark” on and off the field. Ed was an avid fan of The Ohio State Buckeyes, Cleveland Browns, and Detroit Tigers.
He is survived by his wife of 49 years, Jo Ann Henning; children: Teri Henning-Scates of Marion, Kelli (DJ) Dowell of Delaware and Scott Henning of Ada; grandchildren: Austin and Hailie Dowell; step-grandchildren: Jessica and Sarah Scates; siblings: Terry (Brenda) Henning of St. Marys and Nan (Kevin) Luedeke; also surviving are nieces, nephews, and a host of friends.
Ed is preceded in death by his parents; sisters: Coleen and Janice Henning and son-in-law, Lee Scates.
Come raise a glass and share stories of Ed with his family on Monday, May 16, 2022 at the Knights of Columbus Hall, 1232 E Center St, Marion from 3:00 to 7:00 p.m.; Celebration of Life service will follow at 7:00 p.m.; come dressed in your favorite OSU or Browns attire.
