Dominant second half leads no. 6 women's basketball to 65-42 win over Otterbein

The No. 6 Ohio Northern women's basketball team outscored Otterbein 36-18 in the second half to get its school record 18th straight win by a 65-42 score on Wednesday evening at the ONU Sports Center.

With the win the Polar Bears go to 19-1 overall and 13-0 in the OAC, while the Cardinals fall to 16-4 and 10-3 in the OAC play.

Northern held the Cardinals to just 5-of-24 (20.8 percent) shooting in the second half and forced 10 turnovers.

Senior Morgan Dumbaugh led the way for ONU with 17 points.

Junior Cenzie Yoder added 10 points for Northern.

Elderly and low-income tax preparation assistance offered by ONU students

Elderly and low-income tax payers in Hardin and surrounding counties can find free income tax assistance from Ohio Northern University business and law students through Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA).

The VITA Program offers free tax help to low-to-moderate-income (generally $51,000 and below) individuals across the country who cannot prepare tax returns on their own.

As part of this program, ONU students have received training and have become IRS-certified to help prepare basic and intermediate tax returns and identify special credits, such as the Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC), Child Tax Credit and Credit for the Elderly.

"Rin Tin Tin" author Susan Orlean to Skype with Ada Public Library book group

Susan Orlean, the acclaimed author of 'The Orchid Thief' will meet via Skype with the Ada Public Library book group to discuss her latest book, 'Rin Tin Tin: The Life and the Legend'.

The event takes place on Tuesday, Feb. 5, at 7 p.m. at Ada Public Library.  Everyone is welcome.

Veterans benefits explained at free public presentation

Don Dunahue, the Hardin County Veterans Service Officer will present "Veterans Benefits - What you really need to know" on Thursday, Feb. 7 at 2 p.m. at the Community Health Professionals Building, Ada. 

The event is free and open to the public.

Mr. Dunahue will discuss the various benefits that are available to veterans or their surviving spouse and the process for receiving these benefits. There will be a special focus on benefits available for home health and assisted living.

The event is offered jointly by Community Health Professionals of Ada and Blanchard House in Kenton, Ohio.

Softball ranked No. 15 in National Fastpitch Coaches Association preseason poll

The Ohio Northern softball team, under third-year head coach Kim Burke, is ranked No. 15 in the 2013 preseason NCAA Division III poll by the National Fastpitch Coaches Association.

The Polar Bears received 92 points in the poll.

ONU has now been nationally ranked in five consecutive seasons and finished the year ranked No. 11 in 2012.

Pacific Lutheran (Wash.) was unanimous No. 1 choice after winning the NCAA III Tournament title, receiving all eight first place votes and 200 points overall.

ONU to present ‘Suicide in B Flat’ by Sam Shepard

Ohio Northern University’s Freed Center for the Performing Arts will present “Suicide in B Flat” from Feb. 7-9 at 7:30 p.m. with two matinee shows on Saturday, Feb. 9, and Sunday, Feb. 10, at 2 p.m.

The production, done by ONU students, revolves around two detectives attempting to sort out a murder/suicide in a darkly comic, jazz-inspired parody of a detective story written by Sam Shepard, one of America’s greatest contemporary dramatic voices.

This wild ride of a play, first produced in 1976, is situated at the crossroads between Shepard’s experimental past and his more commercial future.
