Tessie Chalfin was a custodian at USV for 25 years

Tessie L. Chalfin, 88, died Saturday, Nov. 29, 2014, at 2:40 p.m. at the Lima Memorial Health System, Lima, Ohio.

She was born on May 24, 1926, to Bryan and Cleo (Streets) Armentrout who preceded her in death.

On June 13, 1946, she married Floyd W. Chalfin and he died Nov. 1, 2003.

She was a custodian at the Upper Scioto Valley Schools for over 25 years. She was a life member of the Roundhead VFW Post #3382 Ladies Auxiliary. She attended the McGuffey Church of Christ.

Betty June Smith was a former town clerk for the Village of Alger

Betty June Smith, 93, died on Sunday, Nov. 23, 2014, at 4:15 a.m. at Otterbein-Cridersville Nursing Home, Cridersville.

She was born on June 3, 1921, in Lima, Ohio to Everett and Frances (Davis) Edmiston and they preceded her in death. On July 3, 1941 she married James B. Smith who died in November of 2006. 

She was a 1939 graduate of Lima South High School. She previously worked in the 1960s as the town clerk and kept the books for the Village of Alger. She was a member of the Alger First United Methodist Church. She was very active in her church and was a member and a past president of the former Women’s Society of Christian Service (now the United Methodist Women).

Denny Hughes, 1934-2014

Dennis G. “Denny” Hughes, 80, died on Sunday, Nov. 23, 2014, at 2:10 a.m. at Kenton Nursing & Rehabilitation Center, Kenton, Ohio.

He was born on March 15, 1934, in Alger, Ohio to Rush and Ruth (Gossard) Hughes and they preceded him in death. On June 30, 1957 he married Golda (Keith) Hughes and she died on Feb. 28, 2010.

Denny was a co-owner of Pizza Planet in Bellefontaine for over 50 years with his brother Don.

Donald Hansby was Navy veteran

Donald Ellis Hanby, age 43, died on Friday, Nov. 21, 2014, at 2:49 p.m. his residence in Ada.

He was born on July 26, 1971 in Toms River, New Jersey, to Wilburt and Karen (Cirillo) Hanby. His father Wilburt and step mother, Kathy Hanby survive in St. Augustine, Fla. His mother preceded him in death. He married Tammy Sheets on Sept. 4, 2010 and she survives in Ada.

Donald worked as a Jet Engine Mechanic and Inspector for URS Federal Services. He was a U.S. Navy Veteran.

Bud Risner was a member of the USV Hall of Fame

Pearl Richard “Bud” Risner, age 82 at 11:14 a.m. on Friday, Nov. 21, 2014, at Kindred Hospital, Lima.

He was born on Jan. 22, 1932 in McGuffey, Ohio to Okey and Cloie (Jordan) Risner and they preceded him in death. He first married Betty Faye Stone and she preceded him in death. He later married Alta (Oliver) Dunson and they were married for 40 years. She preceded him in death in March of 2011.

He retired from Rockwell of Kenton, where he worked for 40 years. He spent two years in the U.S. Army. Bud was inducted into the Upper Scioto Valley Hall of Fame in of January 2014.

Marathon presents check to university’s Mu Delta Chapter of Beta Alpha Psi

Marathon Petroleum donated $1,000 to Ohio Northern University’s Mu Delta Chapter of Beta Alpha Psi on Thursday, Nov. 6. Ryan Abraham, president of the Beta Alpha Psi ONU chapter, and Andria Beehler-Evans, vice president, accepted the generous donation.

Abraham, who expressed his gratitude on behalf of the chapter, said “These funds will truly benefit our chapter, allowing us to make various purchases that we otherwise would not be able to make. Our chapter will use the donated funds to offer our members opportunities to network with financial and business leaders as well as provide our chapter with resources to effectively operate on a daily basis.”
