Mary VanAtta was Ada real estate agent; worked in Ada schools and at ONU

Mary J. VanAtta, 80, died at 4:43 p.m. Jan. 4, 2013, at her residence in Ada.

She was born Oct. 29, 1932, in Saginaw, Mich., to Bert E. and Frances A. Portwine Francisco, who preceded her in death. On Nov. 10, 1951, she married Lloyd C. VanAtta, who survives in Ada.

Mrs. VanAtta worked at Ohio Northern University, Ada Exempted Village School District and was a successful real estate agent. She graduated from Alpena High School in the Class of 1950.

She was a member of the Sugar Grove United Methodist Church and Sugar Grove United Methodist Women. Her generous spirit was displayed by volunteering for Lima Memorial Health System and Hardin County Hospice of Kenton.

Bob Asher owned "This and That Shop"

Charles "Bob" Asher, 77, died at 9:46 p.m. Jan. 3, 2013, at Lima Memorial Health System.

He was born June 29, 1935, in Hyden, Ky., to Charlie and Polly Maggard Asher, who preceded him in death. On Oct. 24, 1953, he married Alberta Kimbler, who survives in Alger. They were married for 59 years.

Mr. Asher was self-employed as owner of the furniture store This & That Shop, Ada. He had also worked at B.F. Goodrich. He was an Army veteran serving from 1954 to 1956, and with the Army Reserves until 1960. He was a member of the Coon Hunters Kennel Club, Harrod.

Oscar Williams was member of Ada Freewill Baptist Church

Earnest "Oscar" Williams, 83, formerly of Lafayette, died at 5:21 a.m. Jan. 3, 2013, at his residence.

He was born Jan. 3, 1930, in Prestonsburg, Ky., to Merdie B. and Dora Adams Williams, who preceded him in death. On Feb. 14, 1948, he married Martha Neeley, who survives in Lima.

Mr. Williams had been a machine operator at Clark Equipment Co., Lima, for 31 years. He retired in 1994 as a custodian from Allen East Elementary School, after 10 years. He was a member of High Street Freewill Baptist Church, Ada.

Gus Holbrook 1917-2012

Guss Holbrook, 95, formerly of Harrod, died at 8 p.m. Dec. 25, 2012, at his residence.

He was born Oct. 22, 1917, in Bonanza, Ky., to George W. and Rachel Music Holbrook, who preceded him in death. His stepmother, Bertha Holbrook, also preceded him in death. In April 1937, he married Dorothy Gibson, who preceded him in death. On Aug. 13, 1966, he married Betty Holbrook, who survives in Lima.

Carolyn Courtney graduated from Ada High School

Carolyn J. Courtney, 72, died Sunday, Dec. 23, 2012, at 5:54 a.m. at Lima Memorial Health System, Lima.

She was born on April 2, 1940 in McGuffey, Ohio to Adam Francis and Doris (Baughman) Edens, and they preceded her in death. She married Jack Courtney and they are divorced.

Carolyn worked for 10 years in the Paint Shop at Excello Corp in Bluffton. She was a member of the Alger Assembly of God Church. She was a graduate of Ada High School in 1958 and attended UNOH for Medical Office Mangement until she needed to quit for health reasons.

Dale Albright was father of an Ada resident

Dale E. Albright, 87, died at 8:30 p.m. Dec. 20, 2012, at Mennonite Memorial Home, Bluffton. He was born March 15, 1925, in Convoy to the late Eli and Minnie (Upp) Albright.

On Nov. 5, 1948, he married Doris L. Edds and she died Dec. 29, 2005. He retired from Ex-Cello Corporation, Bluffton as personnel manager.  He was co-owner with his wife of Albright’s Antiques and had also worked at the Lima Ordinance Depot where he played on a very successful semi-professional baseball team. He was a member of First United Methodist Church, Bluffton; was an avid bridge player and graduated from Mendon High School.
