Reflects their zeal for connecting with students on the learners’ terms

After six years and 1,185 bottles of Diet Dr Pepper, Ohio Northern University professors of biological science Rod Anderson and Linda Young have completed a textbook that reflects their zeal for connecting with students on the learners’ terms.

“Visualizing Microbiology,” published by Wiley, was released in mid-September. The text is available in both hard copy and digital formats and is intended for use in college courses by students pursuing health care academic majors and careers.

Students working with "real-life" clients

By student writer Haley Grigsby
One of the biggest transitions for a college student is the graduation to the “real-world.”

It can come with many questions and concerns because, as a graduate, they are no longer in the proverbial “Kansas” anymore. Navigating through job responsibilities in a career can look starkly different compared to the coursework of a college major.

The Ohio Northern University Symphony Orchestra will present the concert, “Pines and Mountains,” at 8:15 p.m. on Oct. 15 in the Freed Center for the Performing Arts. The concert is presented by the ONU Department of Music.

Music Director Travis Jürgens will conduct the ONU Symphony Orchestra for the concert, which will open with music from “Jurassic Park” by John Williams, followed by composer Jeff Midkiff’s “Mandolin Concerto.” The composer is also the guest soloist for this piece.

Ohio Northern University library renovations create learning space for today’s college student

Not only is it OK, but it is encouraged to talk out loud, write on the walls (selectively) and do other things that were previously considered un-library-like in the renovated first floor of Ohio Northern University’s Heterick Memorial Library.

In fact, you can even check out a smoothie along with that reference material.

“In many ways, we are breaking the rules of traditional college libraries,” said Kathleen Baril, director of ONU’s Heterick Memorial Library. “Library research on a university campus is not what it used to be, and our new library space reflects that. The focus is on best utilizing the library space to meet the needs of today’s college students.”

The jazz group Parker and Parker Quartet will perform a concert at 8 p.m. on Oct. 3 in Presser Hall’s Snyder Recital Hall at Ohio Northern University. The concert, which is presented by the ONU Department of Music, is free and open to the public.

The Parker and Parker Quartet features father Gene Parker on reeds and son Ray Parker on bass. Gene Parker is a fixture in northwestern Ohio and Detroit, and Ray Parker is one of the leading bass players in New York City. The group also will include the young and talented Canadian drummer Jon Foster from Toronto and guitarist Mike Gabriel from Detroit.

Thursday workshop and meeting with art and design students

Renowned artist Jay Ryan of The Bird Machine in Chicago will be at Ohio Northern working with printmaking students on Thursday, according to the ONU Department of Art and Design Facebook page.

He will also conduct a workshop and discuss his work while on campus.

Ryan learned about screenprinting from Steve Walters at Screwball Press in late 1995, where they worked together until 1999, at which point he started The Bird Machine print shop in the basement of his apartment building.
